Pilot Test Results of Survey by Medical Students

NIDA’s STUDY OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE DOC.COM MODULE PROJECT

April 2011

Attachment B3: Pilot Test Results of Survey by Medical Students

Several sections of the survey (see Attachment B2-1) were completed by nine second-year medical students at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (Penn Med). The averaged time it took the students to complete the demographics sections (I, IIB, IIC, III) and questions 2 and 3 in Section IV was about 3.5 minutes. (Note: Survey numbering has been revised since pilot.)

Issue

Changes Made

1. Time to complete survey sections

2. The original survey contained several questions with answers that could unintentionally reveal sensitive information about the respondent (i.e., implications of personal use of substances by asking about participating in 12-step programs in the past).

1. No changes. Average time to complete sections was approximately 3.5 minutes.

2. Those questions were eliminated so that the remaining questions did not reveal any sensitive information.

Comments: There were no complaints or other critical comments expressed by the nine respondents on the appropriateness of the questions or other topics.
