NOTE: While parallel development procedures were employed to develop the
English and Spanish versions, they are independent measures (i.e., item
content—the particular words—differs). In final form, both the English and
Spanish versions will function identically as Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT)administered measures. While development of the English version has been
completed for norming, the Spanish version is at the validation stage and a CAT
has not yet been constructed. Any differences between the two versions will be
summarized in the Spanish version section. Word lists (i.e., the item banks) for
both versions also appear below.

Description:
The participant is asked to read and pronounce letters and words as accurately
as possible. For the youngest children, the initial items require them to
identify the letters in an array with 3 symbols or to identify a specific letter
in an array of 4 letters. Each administration is individualized using a
computerized adaptive format and requires approximately 5 minutes.
Overview:
Each participant will see a series of letters and words presented one at a time
on the computer screen. Items are presented in order of difficulty – the
computer adjusts the difficulty level of items depending on the
participant’s performance. The number of items presented will depend on
age, but will be approximately 50 for most participants. The computer will
administer each item one by one, in an untimed fashion, until the test is
completed.

Public reporting burden for this collection of information is estimated to average 2 1/2 hours per response, including
the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and
completing and reviewing the collection of information. An agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not
required to respond to, a collection of information unless it displays a currently valid OMB control number. Send

Scoring:
The test is scored automatically by the computer, but the examiner must record
whether each response is correct. As the participant pronounces a letter
or word, the examiner checks the pronunciation key on the screen and
clicks the Yes button if the pronunciation is correct or the No button if the
response is incorrect.
Note: It is essential that the examiner thoroughly review and master the item
pronunciation guide before administering this test and adhere to it for all
item scoring. The examiner should not rely on his/her own understanding
of word pronunciations based on previous experience.

Administration Instructions
Before beginning, the examiner should indicate the education level of the
participant on the opening screen.
Say: “Now I’m going to show you some letters and some words. I want you to
read each letter or word out loud. Read each one loud enough so that I
can hear you. Some will be easy and some will be hard. Don’t worry if
you don’t know the word or its meaning – just read it out loud the best you
can. Let’s begin.”
When the first item appears, say: “Tell me, what is this letter/word?” (Say
whichever is appropriate. This prompt can be repeated as many times as
is needed.)
For children ages 3-4, the first item(s) will require the participant to point to a
letter rather than name it. Follow the on-screen instructions. Note: One
or more of these items may be administered to older participants,
depending on their performance on the test and what the computer
selects to display for a given participant.
If the participant says: “I don’t know this one” or “I can’t read it,” say: “It is OK if
you don’t know the word or what it means – just try to read it as best you
can.” This prompt can be used to reassure participants if they refuse to
read the letters/words. If, after prompting, a participant refuses to offer a
response, mark the item incorrect (No) and the computer will move on to
the next item.
Once the examiner scores an item (selects Yes or No), the computer will
proceed to the next item. If the examiner needs to go back and change
a score for a response, he/she needs to select the GO BACK button, return
to the previous screen, and then change the response score. Note:
changing the score of a response may affect the item the participant will
see when the screen refreshes.

Same as above except that participants will receive 70-125 words depending
on age and performance on a set of screening items. (The screener consists of 9
items, and routes participants to 1 of 4 forms of fixed length within form but
varying in length across forms.)

Administration Instructions:
Before beginning, the examiner should indicate the age of the participant;
education level is not needed for the Spanish version in its current form. Also,
changing the score of a response will not affect the next item the participant will
see, as within form the Spanish forms are linear/fixed.
