9 Hole Pegboard

OMB: 0925-XXXX
Expiration Date: XX/XX/XXXX
Name of test: 9 Hole Pegboard
Estimated time burden: 5 minutes (including set-up and instructions)
Materials:
Laptop
9-hole Pegboard1
Description: This measure assesses fine motor dexterity. Data will be recorded
using an on-screen timer.
Set-up:
Place the pegboard on the table, positioning it in front and at the center of the
participant’s body. Place the cup with the 9 pegs on the side of the hand
being tested. The hand not being tested can be used to stabilize the
board. The hand being tested should be flat on the table (palm down)
until the administrator says “Go.”
Administration Instructions:
Say, “In this activity, we are going to see how fast you work with your hands.”
If handedness was not determined earlier, use the established protocol to do
so. If the examiner already knows the participant’s handedness, he/she
should say: “You usually use this hand, right (pointing to the dominant
hand)?”

Public reporting burden for this collection of information is estimated to average 2 1/2 hours per response, including
the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and
completing and reviewing the collection of information. An agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not
required to respond to, a collection of information unless it displays a currently valid OMB control number. Send
comments regarding this burden estimate or any other aspect of this collection of information, including suggestions
for reducing this burden to: NIH, Project Clearance Branch, 6705 Rockledge Drive, MSC 7974, Bethesda, MD

(For the norming manual, we will use a different picture: one showing the cup
with the pegs and without a stopwatch.)
Dominant Hand:
Practice (dominant hand):
Show the participant the pegboard and say, “This is a pegboard and these are
the pegs. All the pegs are the same. Pick up the pegs one at a time using
this (point to the dominant, say your right or left, as appropriate) hand
only. Put them in the holes one at a time until all 9 holes are filled. Then
take them all out, one at a time, like this. (Examiner demonstrates task).
The pegs can be put in the holes or taken out in any order. I have extra
pegs, so if you drop a peg, don’t go after it. I’ll put in another one.”
Have the participant start with his/her hand flat on the table beside the
pegboard. Have the participant do a practice trial with his/her dominant
hand. Remind the participant that the non-dominant hand can be used
to stabilize the board and continue: “Let’s practice with this (point to the
dominant, say your right or left, as appropriate) hand. You can use your
other hand to hold the board in place. Are you ready? 3, 2, 1, Go!”
Test Trial (dominant hand):
Say, “Now I will time how fast you can do this. Pick up the pegs one at a time
using only this (point to the dominant, say your right or left, as
appropriate) hand. Put them in the holes, one at a time, until all 9 holes
are filled. Then take them all out, one at a time. The pegs can be put in
the holes or taken out in any order. Remember to work as fast as you can.
Are you ready? 3, 2, 1 Go!” As the participant is placing the final peg, say,
“And take them out.”
Start the timer on the computer screen when you say “go” and stop the time
when the participant places the final peg back in the cup.
Non-Dominant Hand:
Practice (non-dominant hand):
Turn the pegboard around so that the cup with the pegs is on the side of the
non-dominant hand and say, “Now we are going to do the same thing
with your other hand. Again, pick up the pegs one at a time using only
this (point to the non-dominant, say your right or left, as appropriate)
hand. Put them in the holes, one at a time, until all 9 holes are filled. Then
take them all out, one at a time. The pegs can be put in the holes or
taken out in any order.” Have the participant do a practice trial with
his/her non-dominant hand. Have the participant start with his/her hand
flat on the table beside the pegboard. Remind the participant that his/her

dominant hand can be used to stabilize the board. The examiner
continues: “Let’s practice. Remember, you can use your other hand to
hold the board in place. Are you ready? 3, 2, 1, Go!”
Test Trial (non-dominant hand):
Say, “Now I will time how fast you can do this. Pick up the pegs one at a time
using your (point to the non-dominant, say your right or left, as
appropriate) hand only. Put them in the holes, one at a time, until all 9
holes are filled. Then take them all out, one at a time. The pegs can be
put in the holes or taken out in any order. Remember to go as fast as you
can. Are you ready? 3, 2, 1 Go!” As the participant is placing the final
peg, say, “And take them out.”
Start the timer on the computer screen when you say “go” and stop the timer
when the final peg is placed back in the cup.
