Summary
U.S. Value of Production and Sales Up 11 Percent
The combined value of production from broilers, eggs, turkeys, and the value of sales from chickens in
2008 was $35.9 billion, up 11 percent from the $32.2 billion in 2007. Of the combined total, 64 percent
was from broilers, 23 percent from eggs, 12 percent from turkeys, and less than 1 percent from
chickens.
U.S. Value of Broiler Production Up 7 Percent
The value of broilers produced during 2008 was $23.1 billion, up 7 percent from 2007. The total
number of broilers produced in 2008 was 9.01 billion, up 1 percent from 2007. The total amount of live
weight broilers produced in 2008 was 50.4 billion pounds, up 2 percent from 2007. The 2008 average
price per pound on a live weight equivalent basis was 45.8 cents per pound, compared with 43.6 cents in
2007.
U.S. Value of Egg Production Up 22 Percent
Value of all egg production in 2008 was $8.23 billion, up 22 percent from the $6.72 billion in 2007.
Egg production totaled 90.2 billion eggs, down 1 percent from the 91.1 billion eggs produced in 2007.
In 2008, all eggs averaged 109.0 cents per dozen, compared with 88.5 cents in 2007.
U.S. Value of Turkey Production Up 13 Percent
The value of turkeys produced during 2008 was $4.48 billion, up 13 percent from the $3.95 billion the
previous year. Turkey production in 2008 totaled 7.92 billion pounds, up 5 percent from the
7.57 billion pounds produced in 2007. The average price received by producers during 2008 was
56.5 cents per pound, compared with 52.3 cents in 2007.
U.S. Value of Sales from Chickens Up 20 Percent
The value of sales from chickens (excluding broilers) in 2008 was $61.8 million, up 20 percent from the
$51.5 million a year ago. Prices averaged 6.6 cents per pound, compared with 5.6 cents in 2007. The
number of chickens sold in 2008 totaled 176 million, up 5 percent from the total sold during the
previous year.
This report contains annual estimates for Puerto Rico chickens and eggs. These estimates include
chickens (excluding commercial broilers) number lost, sold for slaughter, pounds, price, and value as
well as all egg production, price, and value.

Reliability of Poultry Production and Value Estimates
Survey Procedures: These estimates were based on inventory, disposition, production, and price
estimates as published in various NASS poultry and agricultural prices reports, as well as information
on imports, exports, and slaughter obtained from other sources. Individual NASS field offices maintain
a list of all known poultry operations and use known sources to update their lists. Data are collected
from all known broiler hatcheries and turkey grow-out operations. Also, data are collected from layer
and egg contractors and independent producers who have at least 30,000 table egg layers, flocks of
hatchery supply layers, or pullet only operations with at least 500 pullets. In every situation, operations
are contacted as close to the reference date as possible and given adequate time to respond via mail, fax,
or electronic data reporting (EDR). Those that do not respond are contacted by phone. Care is
exercised to ensure that all operations of interest are accounted for in the estimates.
Estimation Procedures: Sound statistical methodology is employed to derive the estimates from
reported data. All data are analyzed for unusual values. Data from each operation are compared to their
own past operating profile and to trends from similar operations. Data for missing operations are
estimated based on similar operations or historical data. NASS field offices prepare these estimates by
using a combination of survey indications and historic trends. Individual State estimates are reviewed
by the Agricultural Statistics Board for reasonableness.
Revision Policy: Revisions to previous estimates are made to improve estimates and are generally the
result of late or corrected data. For all species, previous year estimates are subject to revision when the
current year estimates are made. Five years of estimates are also reviewed after the Census of
Agriculture data are available. Estimates are considered final after Census review and no revisions are
made after the final estimates are published.
Reliability: Estimates in this report have no sampling error since they are based on a census of all
known contractors and independent producers who have at least 30,000 table egg layers, flocks of
hatchery supply layers, pullet only operations with at least 500 pullets, all known broiler hatcheries, and
all known turkey grow-out operations. However, estimates are subject to errors such as omission,
duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. While these errors cannot be
measured directly, they are minimized through strict quality controls in the data collection process and a
careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
