Introduction:
The first of the two instruments that will be used for the Annual Arts Benchmarking Survey
(AABS) is provided below. They will be conducted on a rotating basis, in alternating years. The
questions on arts attendance and arts learning will be fielded in February 2013 and February
2015, while the questions on arts creation and performance will be fielded in February 2014.
Instrument 1: Arts Attendance and Arts Learning
[During the last 12 months…]
1. With the exception of elementary or high school performances, did you go to a live
music, theater, or dance performance?
2. With the exception of elementary or high school performances, did you go to a live book
reading or a poetry or storytelling event?
3. With the exception of elementary or high school exhibits, did you go to an art exhibit,
such as paintings, sculpture, pottery, graphic design, or photography?
4. Did you go to a film festival?
5. Did you visit or go see any buildings, neighborhoods, parks or monuments because of
their historical, architectural or design value?
6. Did you take any lessons or classes in music or music appreciation?
7. Did you take any lessons or classes in acting or theater, or dance?
8. Did you take any lessons or classes in art appreciation or art history?
9. Did you take any lessons or classes in creative writing?
10. Did you take any lessons or classes in photography or filmmaking?
11. Did you take any lessons or classes in other visual arts such as drawing, painting, pottery,
weaving, graphic or fashion design?
12. With the exception of books required for work or school, did you read any novels or short
stories, poetry, or plays?
