African American Health Disparities Social Marketing Research Project (see attachments 1-4: consent,
invitation and reminder e-mail scripts, screener, and survey)

Study participants will be 500 African American men and 50 African American women, between the ages
of 18 and 30 . The study sample will be recruited via an online panel survey vendor.

CDC will not provide incentives to study participants. The online survey vendor may provide points (with
no cash value, but redeemable for merchandise online) as part of their pre-established agreements with
their survey panelists or other participants recruited to participate. These points are particularly warranted
to maintain or recruit a panel of young African American men who online survey vendors report to be
difficult to recruit into research studies.

5. Purpose of the overall communication effort into which this health message(s) will fit:

The overall communication effort primarily seeks to reduce the incidence and prevalence of STDs among
African American men ages 18 to 30 in the US, and secondarily among a small sample of African
American women, also 18 to 30. The messages will promote positive sexual health, including partner
communication, information seeking and sharing, testing, condom use, partner respect, personal
responsibility and responsibility to community. We will also test for unintended effects of the messages.
