It can be hard to pay attention in class when you’re hungry. Making
sure your child has a healthy breakfast is an important way you can
support his or her learning in school. Studies show that children
who eat breakfast perform better academically. Check out school

Explore the New World of the Cafeteria
If your child eats lunch at school, the cafeteria can be a new and
exciting experience. It’s also an opportunity for children to learn
about foods and components of a healthy meal. The school lunch at
your child’s school may look different from what you remember.
Starting in School Year 2012, school lunches served under the
National School Lunch Program had to meet new standards. They
now have more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and have less
saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium.

different way, which is why we need to eat foods from each group.

Support Healthier Choices

There are lots of ways to support healthy food choices at school. In
addition to encouraging nutritious food choices at meals, parents can
reinforce this message by:
Providing Healthy Snacks. Snacks are an important opportunity
to help children get the nutrition they need. Whether it’s a snack to be
eaten at school or after school, there are many healthful choices that
children enjoy. Fruit, low-fat cheese and yogurt, and fresh vegetables
and dip are always great options. If the snack cannot be refrigerated,
unsweetened applesauce, fruit cups, raisins, whole-grain crackers,
low-fat popcorn, and even low-sugar whole-grain cereal are among the
many options. Ask your child’s teacher about the possibility of linking
a class snack into something they are learning about. For example,
apple slices make a wonderful snack when the class is learning about
Johnny Appleseed.

Celebrating With Healthier Choices. It’s fun for kids to celebrate
birthdays and holidays at school. These events can easily include
physical activity and healthier foods that are festive. For example,
serve red fruits or sandwiches cut into heart shapes on Valentines’
Day. Or put on music for a “buddy boogie bash.” If you do bring in
cupcakes for your child’s birthday, make sure they are served after
the children have had a chance to eat a healthy lunch.
Suggesting Healthier Fundraisers. Instead of the usual candy and
dessert foods, how about selling fresh fruit or holding a walkathon?
Healthier choices can work just as well and are better for everybody.
Setting a Good Example. Let your kids see you making healthier
choices. If you eat fruits and vegetables, they will too — they take
their lead from you.

Energize Their Mind and Bodies
Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Kids
love to move and it can also provide an important “brain break” so
they can settle down for learning time.
