COMMERICAL DRIVER INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES STUDY SUMMARY

The Case-Control Commercial Driver Individual Differences Study (CDIDS) will examine driver and situational factors and determine the frequency of these factors and their relationship to being involved in a crash and/or violation. The goal of the CDIDS is to identify and prioritize commercial driver individual differences and risk factors. The proposed study will identify risk factors by linking the characteristics of individual drivers with their driving records during the study. Approximately 21,000 commercial drivers will participate in this study.

If you agree to participate in the CDIDS, you will fill out the surveys included in this study packet. These surveys should take approximately 60 minutes to complete, but you may take as much time as needed. The surveys ask basic personal information, such as marital status and driving history, recent life experiences, opinions of one’s self, and driving behavior. You may be contacted in the future (within the next three years) and asked to complete another survey regarding life experiences. This survey will take approximately 30 minutes to complete but you may take as much time as needed to complete the survey. Note that the data gathered in this research will be treated with confidentiality and no names will be linked to the data collected. Your name will be removed from all documents and replaced with a unique driver ID.

Note that your participation or lack of participation in the CDIDS has no influence on job status. Participants who complete the Driver survey packet will receive a $20 gift/debit card. Those who are asked to complete a Follow-Up Survey will receive a $10 cash/gift/debit card as well as be entered in a raffle for a cash gift or prize. A raffle drawing for $1,000 will be held and the potential odds for winning will be approximately 1 in 300. Participants are free to withdraw from the study at any time and for any reason.
