Dear Dr./Mr./Ms.____________________,

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has contracted with IMPAQ International and the RAND Corporation to conduct a synthesis of healthcare-associated infection projects funded by AHRQ during FY 2007-2010. The objectives of the synthesis are to (1) document the main results generated by the projects; (2) disseminate key findings from the projects; and (3) identify remaining gaps in the HAI knowledgebase.

As one part of our synthesis, we are speaking with key project leaders from all 34 HAI contracts and 18 HAI grants funded by AHRQ during FY 2007-2010. I am writing today to ask if you would be willing to participate in a one hour interview with a member of the IMPAQ/RAND research team. Please also see the attached letter of invitation from Dr. Carolyn Clancy, Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

The purpose of the interviews will be to gather information that will enable us to address the following research questions:

    • What are the processes and methods used, key scientific results achieved, and lessons learned under the AHRQ-funded HAI contracts and grants?

    • Which results, practices and tools, and lessons learned are ready for dissemination?

    • What generalizable lessons and principles can be applied to further prevention of HAIs?

    • What types of projects could AHRQ fund to best address remaining gaps and contribute to reductions in HAI rates?

The synthesis is being conducted under the direction of Dr. David Baker from IMPAQ International and Dr. Katherine Kahn from the RAND Corporation.

I will be following up with you in the next few days to schedule a time for you to talk with one of the IMPAQ/RAND team members.  If you have any questions, I can be reached at [tel#] and [email address].

Thank you,
