The mission of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is to serve the clinical
and industrial community by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology. One way
we do so is by providing primary reference materials, which are defined as materials that are
certified to be traceable to the international system of units (SI). In an effort to evaluate and
prioritize which materials are needed within the clinical community, we have designed a reference
materials survey. We value your input, so please take a few minutes to answer the questions
below.
Thank you for your time!
* Required
1) Which company or testing laboratory do you represent? *

2) What best describes your affiliation? *
Private
Government
Academia
Industry
3) What is your perception of the purpose of a primary reference material?
You may choose more than one response.
as a positive control for diagnostic testing
as a calibrant for kit manufacturing
as a calibrant for a positive control
extraction control only
detection control only
full extraction through detection control
everyday use control
Other:
4) Do you use primary reference materials in your work? *

5) If yes to question 4, from where do you purchase your reference materials?
You may choose more than one response.
Acrometrix
Advanced Biotechnologies
National Institute of Standards and Technology
World Health Organization
Zeptometrix
Other:

6) For what purposes do you use primary reference materials?
You may choose more than one response.
as a positive control for diagnostic testing
as a calibrant for kit manufacturing
as a calibrant for a positive control
extraction control only
detection control only
full extraction through detection control
everyday use control
Other:
7) For which viruses does your laboratory or company currently use reference materials?

8) Do you think that primary reference materials are a necessity in the clinical community? *

9) What is your preferred matrix (specimen type) for a reference material? *
You may choose more than one response.
Cells
Viral Particles
Urine
Serum/Plasma
Blood
Extracted DNA or RNA in a buffer
Other:
10) If a reference material in your preferred matrix is unavailable, would extracted DNA/RNA in
a buffer work for your purposes? *

11) Would you rather have multiple materials of different genotypes of a virus or one material
with a conserved region of the viral genome? *
Multiple materials of different genotypes
One material with a conserved region
Other:

12) If you answered, "multiple genotypes" to question 10, please explain.

13) Other than for viruses, what other primary reference materials do you think the clinical
community lacks?
Please prioritize in order of importance.

14) We would love to hear any other comments or suggestions here.

person is required to respond to, nor shall any person be subject to a penalty for failure to comply
with, a collection of information subject to the requirements of the PRA unless that collection of
information displays a currently valid OMB control number. Public reporting burden for this collection
is estimated to be 10 minutes per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching
existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed and completing and reviewing the
collection of information.
Send comments regarding this burden estimate or any aspect of this collection of information,
including suggestions for reducing this burden, to the National Institute of Standards and
