Dear Parent/Guardian of [Student Name],

It is not very often any of us gets selected to give feedback to the U.S. Department of Education about
our child’s experiences at school. You are one of 18,000 parents selected nationwide to participate in the
National Longitudinal Transition Study (NLTS 2012). We are writing again to ask you to set aside 30-35
minutes to help evaluate programs in our schools. The survey can be scheduled at any time most convenient
for you or completed in several short calls. Now, more than ever, government money must be spent wisely.
With your help, this study will improve programs to help our nation’s youth make a successful transition
from school and meet their goals.
Your participation is completely voluntary, although it is very important to us. If you do take part, all
your answers to the questions will be kept confidential.
Your participation is vital to this study, and we ask you to reconsider your decision and participate.
Previously, we have promised you $20 to complete this interview. As a show of good faith, and because this
is so important, we have enclosed $5 now and will pay you an additional $30 after you complete the
interview.
We’d also like to hear from your child and will send a $10 gift card for completing a 30-minute
telephone interview about experiences with school and hopes for life after high school. You can help your
child complete the interview, if necessary. With your consent, we will also:
 Ask your child’s teachers to complete a survey
 Contact you and your child again in 2014 to complete another survey over the phone
 Conduct a 30-40 minute in-person assessment in 2014 of your child’s skills in reading, math, and
other subjects
You do not have to agree to all of the above to complete the interview and be paid for your time.

If you have any questions, please call our toll-free number (866-964-7962) or email us
([email protected]). You may also visit the study website at http://ies.ed.gov/ncee/nlts.
We look forward to speaking with you.
Sincerely,

Yumiko Sekino, Ph.D., Project Officer
