The General Services Administration (GSA) is designated as the domain owner and Domain Policy Authority for any internet top-level domain intended for use by governmental entities in the United States. In 1997, the Federal Networking Council, with guidance in the form of Internet Engineering Task Force Informational RFC 2146, delegated jurisdiction for the management of the gov domain to GSA. GSA's Office of Governmentwide Policy oversees and administers the "dot gov" domain registration process which requires requesting government entities to submit information in order to register a new second-level domain.
