Asparagus: Production from the 2012 asparagus crop is forecast at 759,000 cwt, down 10 percent from last year.
Harvested area, at 25,300 acres, is down 7 percent from 2011. Total value of the crop, at 83.4 million dollars, is down
11 percent from 2011. Fresh production of 626,000 cwt is down 7 percent from a year ago. Processed production, at
6,650 tons, is down 22 percent from 2011. Asparagus for canning, at 2,100 tons, is down 32 percent from last year. Frozen
asparagus production of 4,550 tons is down 16 percent from 2011.
In Michigan, freezing temperatures in April followed by hot and dry weather during May and June resulted in lost fields.
Harvest was complete by mid-June in the southwest region of the State. In California, harvest of the asparagus crop began
in mid-March and was complete in most areas of the State by mid-June.

Strawberry Comments
Strawberries: Strawberry production in the United States is forecast at 27.7 million cwt, down 3 percent from 2011. Area
harvested, at 49,300 acres, is down 1 percent from last year. In California, cool weather during April slowed development
of the berry crop. However, production and quality were reported to be good. In Florida, strawberry planting was
underway by October. In Oregon, harvest season started in early June.

Onion Comments
Spring onions: Production of spring onions in 2012 is forecast at 7.38 million cwt, down 17 percent from last year. The
crop covered 24,900 harvested acres. The average yield at 296 cwt per acre is 3 cwt below 2011. In Georgia, disease
problems were reported due to adverse weather conditions. In northern California, an early frost and wind driven erosion
increased fungal problems for the crop.
Summer, non-storage onions: Production of non-storage onions is forecast at 10.8 million cwt, up 3 percent from last
year. Harvested area covers 18,800 acres, unchanged from the previous year. In California, despite adverse weather
conditions, harvest was on schedule and the onion crop was reported to be developing well. In Nevada, harvest was
underway and early yields were reported to be good. In New Mexico, growing conditions for non-storage onions were
reported to be good. In Washington, exceptional yields were reported for the State.
Summer, storage onions: Growers expect to harvest 99,850 acres of storage onions this year, up 1 percent from last year.
In California, harvest was on schedule and the crop was reported to be developing well. Washington onion growers
experienced a very good growing season.
2011 Storage onions, revised: The final tally of 2011 storage onion production is 54.8 million cwt, down 2 percent from
2010. The 2011 storage crop is valued at $406 million, a decline of 24 percent from 2010. Average price per cwt declined
from $10.70 in 2010 to $8.31 in 2011. With spring and non-storage summer onions added in, total value of the 2011
harvested onions is $740 million, down 29 percent from 2010.

Processing Crop Comments
Snap beans: Contracted production of snap beans is forecast at 672,370 tons, up slightly from last year. Contracted
harvested area is down slightly but yield is up 0.05 tons per acre from last year. In Indiana, planting conditions were ideal
due to higher than average temperatures and dry weather during the spring season. In Minnesota, planting was completed
ahead of schedule due to warm and dry conditions during the spring season. In Pennsylvania, no major pest or disease
problems were reported.
Sweet corn: Contracted sweet corn production is forecast at 2.70 million tons, up 3 percent from last year. An increase of
4 percent in contracted harvested area is expected to more than offset a decline in yield of 0.07 ton per acre from 2011. In
Minnesota, planting was completed on schedule due to a mild winter and early spring conditions.
Green peas: Contracted production is forecast at 350,490 tons, up 19 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at
179,500 acres, is up 13 percent from 2011. The expected yield, at 1.95 tons per acre, is 0.10 tons more than a year ago.
Area contracted for planting, at 186,800 acres, is up 15 percent from 2011. Area contracted for canning, at 78,800 acres, is
up 15 percent from last year. Area contracted for freezing, at 108,000 acres, is up 15 percent from 2011. In Minnesota,
planting was completed ahead of schedule due to a mild winter and warm, dry conditions in April.
Tomatoes: Contracted tomato production is forecast at 13.5 million tons, up 9 percent from last year. Contracted
harvested area is up 4 percent and yield is up 2.47 tons per acre from last year. In Michigan, planting was complete by
late June and by mid-July the crop had started bearing fruit.

Statistical Methodology
Survey procedures: Grower and processor surveys are conducted in preparation for this report. Telephone follow-up of
mail survey non-respondents is used to ensure adequate coverage. Other data are obtained via fax or personal interview.
Estimating procedures: Information obtained from the vegetable surveys along with administrative data is used to
establish forecasts of area and production. These forecasts are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with
historical estimates.
Revision policy: Vegetable forecasts will not be revised. End-of-season estimates are made following harvest and are
subject to revision the following year based on a thorough review of all available data.
Reliability: Survey indications are subject to sampling variability because all operations growing vegetables are not
included in the sample. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation
for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be measured directly,
but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for
consistency and reasonableness.
