Attachment 7Changes to the NLSY97 Questionnaire from Rounds 15 to 16


The Round 16 questionnaire will resemble the Round 15 questionnaire with few modifications. Some of the modifications have been made because the interview will be conducted biennially rather than annually. Below, we list the sections of the Rounds 15 and 16 questionnaires, with any changes planned between the two rounds. Edits are marked in red.


  1. Household Information

  • Questions about a respondent’s parent owning a business, serving a prison sentence or serving in the military are being added.


  1. Schooling

  • Deleted questions on high school program of study, incoming credits, transfer credits, living arrangements at school.

  • Deleted question on which family members and friends provided financial assistance

  • Moved questions on remedial coursework out of the term loop, to be asked once per school.

  • Moved major field of study questions out of term loop, to be asked once per school

  • Deleted questions on number of credits to degree completion.



  1. Employment

  • Short term jobs will now be defined as jobs lasting 26 weeks or less rather than 13 weeks or less.

  • Deleted question on type of government job.

  • Deleted question on whether the business is incorporated or not.

  • Reduced the number of questions about number of vacation days.


  1. Training

  • Deleted questions about the costs and fees for training programs and how the training program was financed

  • Removed question on how proficiency was measured in the training program.


  1. Marriage

  • Changed definition of marriage like relationship to living together for a period of at least three months.

  • Deleted fertility expectations questions being given to prior round NIRs


  1. Fertility

  • Fertility expectations questions will be asked in alternate rounds starting in round 17.

  • Removed questions about relationship with other biological parent of non-resident child.


7. Childcare: Short section will be administered in Round 16


8. Income

  • All questions were updated to ask about the calendar year 2012

  • An additional question was added to ask about family income for 2011

  • Income questions were consolidated to ask combined questions about income from other sources

(a) income from dividends and interest payments

(b) rental income and income from estates, trusts, annuities, inheritances and gifts

(c) social security income, pension, retirement income, alimony, veterans and GI benefits, life insurance and government programs

  • We no longer plan to ask about income for the missed calendar year for non-interviewed respondents

  • Remove question on cash advances.

  • Added question on Earned Income tax credit (EITC)

  • Added questions about spouse/partner’s income from worker’s compensation


9. Assets/Assets30

  • No major changes are planned for the assets and asset30 sections


10. Program Participation

  • No major changes are being planned for this section


11. SAQ

  • SAQ I and II will be combined into a single section

  • Questions on describing weight, carrying a gun (YSAQ-381), gangs, relationship quality and dating are being removed.

  • Questions on the following topics will be asked every 2 or 3 rounds, the next round it will be asked is shown in brackets:

Computer use [ask in R17]

Drug usage (marijuana, hard drugs) {ask in R17]

Contact with mother, father (ask in R18]

To whom do you turn to about emotional problems? [ask in R18]

  • The questions on internet use, weight, substance use, smoking, arrests and incarcerations, life after incarceration, sex, pregnancy and outcomes will continue to be asked.

  • Questions on volunteering will appear in round 16 and selected rounds.

  • Questions on personality traits will be added

  • The number of questions on sex have been reduced and some questions have been changed. The questions will cover the past 12 months.

12. Contact

  • No changes


13. Health

  • Questions on health conditions were added. These were last asked in round 11.

  • Questions on major events were added, these were last asked in round 11. To reflect the time interval changing because of biennial administration, we will ask about major events over the past 6 years.

  • Many questions on health behaviors will not be included in Round 16, many of these will be included by rotation in future rounds

  • For Round 16 we retain questions on general health, work limitations, doctor visits, insurance, missing school or work due to illness, injury or mental health reasons.


14. Health29

  • No changes are being made to this section. The section will be administered to those born in 1984.

  • Introductory questions will be updated to Round 16. These questions are Y-VERSION and YHHI-1200.

  • Delete YHHI-PARSIB-CHECK, YHHI-52160 and 52165

  • Add a YHHI-SIBCHECK before YHHI-51941 and 51942, so that only R15 NIRs get these two questions.

  • Questions about the respondent’s parents will be added, these are being inserted before YHHI-SIBCHECK.

  • Move major and second major questions out of the term loop and asked once per school. These questions were YSCH 21299, 21300, 21399, 21400. These questions have been renamed as YSCH 21299A, 21300A, 21399A, 21400A.

  • Remove YSCH-22000

  • Remove YSCH-23900, 24300, 24000, 24100, 24200 and 24400, 25000-LOOP-END which asked about people who provided financial assistance. The wording in YSCH-24600 and 24700 were changed to include all friends and family.
