DISCUSSION GROUP OUTREACH SCRIPT: Telephone Protocol for Contacting FDPIR Participants/ Eligible Non-participants for Group Discussion Guide

TELEPHONE PROTOCOL: To be used on participants/ non-participants referred by FDPIR program contacts.

Hello, I am (name of interviewer) from the Urban Institute, a non-profit research organization in Washington, DC. Am I speaking with (name of respondent)? IF YES, CONTINUE. IF NO, ASK FOR PERSON OR A GOOD TIME TO CALL PERSON.

Recently your name was provided by staff at the [Name of local FDPIR program] who said you might want to participate in a group discussion about the FDPIR Program and other food programs in your area for a study we are conducting. I am calling to see if you would like to participate in this discussion, for which you will receive $25 as a token of our appreciation. Is now a good time to see if you would like to participate?

IF NO, ASK FOR A GOOD TIME TO CALL BACK. IF YES, CONTINUE:

Great, may I tell you a little bit about the study? IF YES: You’re name was provided to us by program officers at [Name of local FDPIR Program] because we want to learn about how the [FDPIR program] is serving food needs of the local community. The [FDPIR program] is one of seventeen around the country selected for the study. What we learn will be useful to the tribal government, the USDA, and Congress in understanding reasons for changes in FDPIR participation and ways that FDPIR and the FSP programs can work together to meet people’s food assistance needs.

We hope that you will join us to participate in a discussion group to talk about how people decide to sign up for FDPIR, what benefits and services you get from the program, and what you like or dislike about it. Discussions will last approximately 1.5 hours. Participants will receive $25 as a token of our appreciation. The group will be held [location] on [Day, Date] at [Time].

Participation in the group discussion is voluntary and will not affect your relationship with the FDPIR. All comments will be kept entirely anonymous – researchers will not use names in any reports .

Can I mark you down for attending?

IF YES, WRITE DOWN NAME ON LIST OF EXPECTED ATTENDEES. IF NO,

Thank you for your time. Have a nice day!
