U.S. Census Bureau
Washington, DC 20233-0001

Dear Sir/Madam:
“The Census Bureau’s
economic surveys are
indispensable to understanding
America’s economy. They
ensure the accuracy of the
statistics we rely on for
economic policy and for
successful business planning.
Participating in the monthly
survey helps us all."

The U.S. Census Bureau requests your participation in the Survey of
Construction (SOC). The enclosed form requests information on new
residential buildings selected for this very important survey.
•

What we ask of you. Please complete the enclosed form and
keep it for use when our representative calls or visits you within the
next few days.

•

How this information will be used. Your responses will be
combined with information from other participants to produce
estimates of housing starts, sales of new single-family houses and
housing completions. These estimates are widely used to make vital
economic decisions.

•

Legal Authority. Data collection for SOC is authorized by law
(Title 13, Section 182, United States Code) to furnish monthly reports
on new residential construction and sales.

•

Confidentiality. Data you provide are CONFIDENTIAL by law
(Title 13, United States Code). Your report may be seen only by
persons sworn to uphold the confidentiality of Census Bureau
information and is used only for statistical purposes.

The Office of Management and Budget
has approved this survey and given it an
8-digit control number, which is shown in
the upper right-hand corner of the
enclosed form. If this number was not
displayed, we could not request your
participation. We estimate that it will take
from 3 to 7 minutes to complete an
interview for each building, with 5 minutes
being the average time. Send comments
regarding this estimate or any aspect of
the collection of this information, including
suggestions for reducing this burden, to:
