CPS Email and Internet Mode Supplement Preliminary Results

Aleia Clark Fobia

July 25, 2013

As of July 25 we have had 15 respondents answer the email supplement. Eight respondents have completed the A module and 7 have completed the B supplement.

Module A Q1A. Do you have an email address we could use to contact you?

Only one respondent provided an email address without further prompting. One respondent said yes and then wanted the interviewer to ask if she preferred to be contacted by email, which she did not. All respondents answered yes to this question.

Q1AA. What is that email address?

  • All respondents gave full email addresses in response to this question.

Module B Q1B. What is your email address?

  • One respondent gave the address, then immediately asked what we would be using it for and seemed hesitant after the fact. Another respondent hesitated before complying and said that they did not use their email much and preferred to be contacted over the phone. One respondent had multiple email addresses and asked if we wanted both of them. This respondent said that she has one email for business and another, newer address for personal email. She gave her business email address. All 7 respondents gave their email addresses in response to this question.

In general, respondents were quite cooperative in providing email addresses. It is important to note that these respondents are a self-selected group who have agreed to participate in a cognitive interview. In addition, they have provided their email addresses as part of the recruitment screener and many of them are sent directions to the Bureau through email before they participate in the interview.

Shared email question (Q3):

  • Respondents tend to have their own email addresses; however, there seems to be some confusion between whether shared means that multiple people receive and send email from the same address, or whether other people having access to the account can be interpreted as shared.

Mode Choice question (Q5):

  • Respondents tended to ask for clarification about which survey they would be answering. This was especially the case when respondents were asked whether their answer would change if asked to respond once every month for several months. Respondents wanted to know whether they would be taking the same survey that they had just completed and if not, what types of questions would be asked.

Past Internet survey question (Q8):

  • Most respondents did not have trouble answering this question. One respondent first answered that he had done an internet survey in the past. When probed, he responded that it was a job application and then changed his answer because he thought that it did not count as a survey.
