2012/13 Coffee 
Marketings Lower, but Value Higher 

In cooperation with

Hawaii coffee marketing for 2012/13 is estimated at 7.0 million pounds, down 
8  percent  from  the  2011/12  crop  season.  Total  acreage  and  harvested 
acreage  remained  unchanged  at  8,000  and  6,300,  respectively.  Yields 
averaged 1,110 pounds per acre compared to 1,210 for crop year 2011/12. The 
Statewide  farm  price  for  coffee  averaged  $4.80  per  pound  (parchment 
equivalent basis) for the 2012/13 season, 16 percent above the 2011/12 season 
of $4.15 per pound. The farm revenue for coffee is estimated at $33.6 million 
(parchment  equivalent  basis)  for  this  season,  7 percent  more  than  last 
season.  The  Coffee  Berry  Borer  remained  a  major  concern  for  the  coffee 
industry. Variable precipitation levels also affected the crop. ■

Coffee harvesting occurs throughout the year in Hawaii. The main harvest normally begins in late summer and extends to the early part of the
following year. 2 Average yields based on parchment equivalent marketings and harvested acreage. 3 Expressed in parchment equivalent pounds.
Coffee marketed in cherry form was converted to an equivalent parchment weight and added to parchment marketings. 4 Represents an average farm
price for parchment equivalent sales. Obtained by dividing farm revenues from the sale of cherry and parchment coffee by total marketings (parchment
equivalent basis). 5 Preliminary.

Cattle:  Marketings for the First Half  
of 2013 Up 3 Percent from the First Half of 2012 
Cattle  marketings  (sum  of  exports  and  local  slaughter) 
totaled 23,000 head for the time period of January through 
June  2013,  up  3  percent  from  the  same  six  months  of  2012.  
Exports  accounted  for  77  percent  of  the  total  with  steers 
making  up  57  percent  of  the  exported  cattle.  Local 
slaughter,  accounted  for  the  remaining  23  percent  of 
marketings  totaled  5,200  head.    The  average  live  weight  of 
commercially slaughtered cattle in Hawaii during the first six 
months  was  1,116,  down  2.3  percent  or  26  pounds  lighter 
compared to the first six months of 2012. ■

Hogs:  Pork Production for the First Half of 2013 
Down 4 Percent Compared to the First Half of 2012

Total hogs slaughtered during the first 
six  months  of  2013  totaled 
6,600  head, down 4 percent from the 
6,900  head  slaughtered  during  the 
first  six  months  of  2012.  Total  live 
weight  was  1.6  million  pounds,  down 
4  percent  from  the  same  time  period 
the previous year. Average live weight 
for  the  first  half  of  2013  was 
243 pounds or 5 pounds less than the 
first half of 2012. ■

Sugarcane and Sugarbeets: 
U.S.  SUGARCANE:      Production  of  sugarcane  for  sugar  and  seed  in  2013  is  forecast  at  30.4  million  tons,  down 
6  percent from last year. Producers intend to harvest 911,100 acres for sugar and seed during the 2013 crop year, up 
8,700 acres from last year. Expected yield for sugar and seed is forecast at 33.3 tons per acre, down 2.4 tons from 
2012. ■

U.S.  SUGARBEETS:      Production  of  sugarbeets  for  the  2013  crop  year  is  forecast  at  30.0  million  tons,  down 
15 percent from last year. Planted area is forecast at 1.21 million acres, down slightly from the June Acreage report 
and  down  2  percent  from  last  year.  Producers  expect  to  harvest  1.18  million  acres,  up  slightly  from  the  previous 
forecast but down 2 percent from 2012. Expected yield is forecast at 25.4 tons per acre, a decrease of 3.9 tons from 
last year. ■

Aquaculture: Value at Record High $55.7 Million for 2012 
Hawaii  aquaculture  increased 
for the second year reaching a 
record  high  $55.7  million  in 
2012, compared to 40.0 million 
during  the  previous  year.  
Algae  sales  accounted  for 
$28.4  million  and  almost  have 
of  the  value.  The  ‘other’ 
category 
included 
the 
remaining sales. ■
