List of Changes to the FPRQ Surveys

The following changes have been made to the Parent, Provider, and Director Surveys after the cognitive interviews and data analysis of the pilot test. They include:

Parent Survey

  • Question 1d

    • Remove “and development”

      • Double barreled.

  • Question 2

    • Change stem for parent and provider questions

      • To “met with or talked to”.

      • In order to match with wording in Question 1.

  • Question 3

    • Drop and replace

      • Item is not loading well, based on the result of psychometric analysis.

      • May have social desirability concerns.

      • Additionally, it does not get at relationship quality between parent and provider.

  • Question 6a

    • Drop

      • Item is more of a reflection of time in care and age of child.

  • Question 6e

    • Replace “convey” with “communicate” so item reads “Ask about the cultural values or beliefs you want him/her to communicate to your child”

      • The word “convey” was not as easily understood to respondents.

  • Question 7c

    • Invert education and care

      • For consistency with other items in question.

  • Question 7f

    • Revise wording to:

      • Provides you opportunities to give feedback on his or her performance”.

      • Clarifies wording and avoids use of “provider or teacher”.

  • Question 8b

    • Drop item

      • Item was found to be ambiguous.

        • It could be interpreted as either positive or negative.

        • Either they are doing it in an appropriate way or they are being invasive from the parent’s perspective.

  • Question 8e

    • Drop item

      • Item was found to be ambiguous.

        • There is evidence that the same response categories were being used to signal that the conversation had never come up (NA) or that issue had come up and the subsequent conversation had been positive or negative.

  • Question 8f

    • Drop item

      • Parents may not be present to see if ideas are implemented in the classroom

      • Parents who haven’t been asked are not sure whether to report “not at all like me provider” response option or a different category

  • Question 8k

    • Drop item

      • Multiple interpretations, including:

        • Reflects use of curriculum and standards which are out of the control of the teacher.

        • Parents do not have the information.

        • Teacher is expert on the topic of childcare, so that is why she “sticks to her own ways”.

        • Teacher doesn’t take feedback.

  • Question 8m

    • Drop

      • Same interpretation problems as 8k above.

  • Question 8n

    • Replacing “conveys” with “communicates”

      • We do not have objections to another word as a possible change to another synonym for “convey”.

  • Question 23

    • Reword to clarify whether it is before or after taxes

      • Respondents varied in whether they provided before or after taxes.

Provider Survey

  • Question 1c

    • Remove “and development”

      • Double barreled.

  • Question 1h

    • Split into 2 questions

    • Cognitive interview findings suggested that item was:

      • Double barreled.

      • Caused problems for respondents.

      • Add “developmental milestones” between 1d and 1e.

    • How their child is progressing towards goals” and “how their child is progressing towards developmental milestones”

  • Question 2

    • Drop all but 2d which should be moved to 5 series

      • Move question about parenting style in between 5d and 5e.

      • Not clear that these items are tapping into conceptual model. Additionally, it is not clear how items should be interpreted. High or low values are not reflective of a good or bad relationship.

  • Question 4

    • Drop

      • Replacing with questions about language of provider and language of parent.

      • Same rational as for the parent survey.

  • Question 8b

    • Drop

      • Multiple interpretations.

  • Question 8e

    • Add “their” and “the”

      • When it comes to “their” child “the” parent is the expert”.

      • The previous wording was not parallel to parent question which asked about parents as experts for their own child.

      • The generic “parents are experts” tripped providers up because a parent is not an expert on all children.

  • Question 10d

    • Change to “parents”

      • Sometimes it is hard for me to work with parents who do not share my beliefs”.

      • Revision clarifies who we are referring to.

      • Keeps questions parallel to other items.

  • Question 12b

    • Remove “such as fairs”

      • It was causing respondents to focus on example rather than community events in general.

  • Question 12d

    • Change wording

      • Change to: “change my work schedule in response to parents’ work or school schedules”.

      • Clarifies this question in order to determine what the provider would do rather than just the generic place of employment.

Director Survey

  • Question 8

    • Add

      • c. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)?

      • l. Health insurance?
