Describe Family Study design process, objectives, target population, data collection –

This paper provides a description of this landmark family study including research objectives, study methodology, survey instrument, ancillary data sets, and plans for dissemination of research findings. The Family Study offers a unique opportunity to define the challenges that military families experience and advance the understanding of protective factors that will benefit military families today and into the future.

Examine enrollment of invited participants for Panels 2 and 3 and evaluate the effect of deployment and mental health conditions in response rates

Evaluated nearly 350,000 invited subjects (from 2004-2008) of the Millennium Cohort Study for factors prior to invitation associated with study enrollment. Multivariable logistic regression was utilized, adjusting for demographic and other confounders, to determine the associations between both deployment experience and prior healthcare utilization with enrollment into the study.

Conduct analysis evaluating non-response after initial enrollment (Panel 4) of invited participants for Panel 4 and the Family Study

Evaluate nearly 270,000 invited subjects (from 2011-2013) of the Millennium Cohort Study and the Family Cohort Study for factors prior to invitation associated with study enrollment. Multivariable logistic regression will be utilized, adjusting for demographic and other confounders, to determine the associations between sociodemographics, deployment experience, and prior healthcare utilization with enrollment into the study.

ongoing

Calculate the unit response rate and longitudinal response rates for each survey cycle, for all panels.

MilCo Study Team

In progress/ongoing – has been partially completed for Panels 1-3

ongoing

Calculate longitudinal non-response and attrition weights for all Panels based on the inverse of the probability of response across study wave. Plan to use these calculated weights, as appropriate, in future studies.

Pending team

In progress – done for Panel 1
