Fish Eaters
Study

What might the study tell us?

The Michigan Department of
Community Health is organizing the
Fish Eaters Study.
We want to learn if the harmful
chemicals in some Michigan fish are
also in the people who eat them.
We are asking people who o en eat
fish from the Detroit, or Saginaw
Rivers or Saginaw Bay to be part of
the study.

Why are we doing this study?
Ea ng fish is part of a
healthy diet. But some
fish have chemicals in
them
t
that could harm
your
y
health. These
chemicals can also
harm the development of babies and
children.
The study will give us more
informa on to help you make choices
about ea ng safe fish.
It will also help in making decisions
that be er protect the health of your
community.

• which fish are safer to eat
• if the chemicals found in some fish
stay in people who eat them
• if we need to test more fish in the
Detroit and Saginaw areas

What will the study tell you?
• how much of the chemicals found in
fish is in your blood and urine, if any
• if the amount of chemicals in your
blood and urine is different than
other people in the U.S.
• if your health could be harmed by
the amount of arsenic, cadmium,
lead, or mercury in your blood or
urine

What won’t the study tell you?
• the amount of PCBs, dioxins,
manganese, or pes cides that could
harm you. The amount of these
chemicals that is harmful to health
is not known.
• about other chemicals that we are
not tes ng for
• about your health or if the
chemicals have harmed your health
