Attachment 6j. NY Interview questionnaire, Burmese

In response to the comments sent via email and comments embedded in this document, we have prepared the following responses.

Question #

Variable

Response

6

Email address

This is the first time email address has been asked.

10-11

Demographics

We ask this here because this info will be used to match participant with appropriate translator/interviewer.  We have been advised this is not considered sensitive information by the refugees.

12-17

Reproductive history

This information is needed to assist with interpreting biomonitoring results because breastfeeding is associated with reduced body burdens of persistent organic compounds.  We ask the questions in the format our advisors recommended as the best way to elicit the needed information.

19-21

Household information

We ask for more specific information from the Burmese refugees because of the possibility of more unusual demographics of family groupings or households.  We ask these questions so that we can estimate the potential public health impact of fish-eating and associated contaminant burdens among people sharing food in the household.

30-31

Food stamps and WIC

Instead of asking for annual income, as for sport anglers, for Burmese refugees, we ask these 2 questions as measures of income/poverty status.  Our local advisors recommended this, as the refugees do not tend to know their annual household or personal income.

48-51

Residential history

We ask the sports anglers how long they lived in NY's Western Region as a measure of length of time they resided in the Great Lakes area.  In contrast, we ask the Burmese refugees more questions about their residential history and fish-eating histories for two reasons.  1.  For Burmese refugees, locally caught fish or locally available fish paste are a large proportion of their diet.  2.  By definition, they have lived in a variety of locations, both in the U.S. and internationally.   In other words, more questions are being asked of the Burmese because their potential exposure histories, with relevance to the biomonitoring results, will be more complex than for the majority of sports anglers.
