Basis for State selection: Of all States, 21 had 2% or more of all U.S. equids/equine ops or a weighted percentage of equids and equine ops. Based on density of horses and farms with horses per square mile, 13 of those 21 States also ranked in the top 25 States by density of horses per square mile. Based on density of horses per square mile, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Rhode Island were added to the list of States to participate in the study. Oregon was added based on having 1.94 wt% of equids and ops and for geographic representativeness. Indiana was replaced by Alabama based on the ranking of States by resources and performance in previous studies and for geographic representativeness. Thus, 28 States would be included in the study and would represent 71.50% of equids and 71.72% of equine operations in the United States.

Number of operations based on response rates from Equine 1998:

The following assumptions were made when doing the sample size estimates:

• 500,000 horse premises nationally (125,000 per region)

• All respondents to the NASS phase are eligible for the VMO phase (1+ horses).

• Based on Equine ‘98 response rates it was assumed that 64% would complete the NASS component (Phase I), 70% of those would agree to have their names turned over to VS for Phase II, 75% of those would complete the VMO questionnaire.

• Design effect=2.0, 95% confidence
