Pre-survey postcard

Dear Grand Canyon Whitewater Floater:

Your name was randomly selected from a list of people who recently floated the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Within the next week or two, you will receive a survey in the mail from the University of Montana. The National Park Service has requested that the University conduct this survey to help better understand the recreational experiences of Grand Canyon whitewater floaters.

Only a select number of people are being asked to take part in this study, so your participation is very important. Once you receive the questionnaire, we will ask that you return it in the postage paid envelope that will be provided. The questionnaire should take about 20 minutes to complete. We are asking that you and everyone receiving a survey from us complete and return it as soon as possible.

Thank you in advance for your help

Sincerely,

Dr. John Duffield, Survey Director

Survey Cover Letter

Dear Grand Canyon Whitewater Floater:

You are receiving this letter because within the past year you completed a Grand Canyon whitewater floating trip. You have been randomly selected to participate in a National Park Service sponsored study to help understand the recreational experiences of people who have floated this stretch of the Colorado River corridor.

The National Park Service requested the University of Montana to conduct this study to help understand the public’s thoughts about the management of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. This area is a nationally-important recreation and conservation resource and is considered to have significant water-related recreational use. The responses to this survey will help the National Park Service understand the possible effects that different management strategies would have on the recreational behaviors and values of whitewater floaters.

Inside this packet you will find a questionnaire and a self-addressed stamped envelope. The questionnaire takes most people about 20 minutes to complete, and it does not require any special knowledge - we just ask that you consider each question and respond with your own opinion. All information you provide will remain anonymous and will be combined with the answers of others. Only a select number of people are being asked to take part in this study, so your participation is very important. Once you have completed the questionnaire, we are asking that you return it as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please contact my office at 406-721-2265. Thank you in advance for your help with this project.

Sincerely,

Dr. John Duffield, Survey Director

Reminder Postcard

Dear Grand Canyon Whitewater Floater:

About two weeks ago you received a questionnaire in the mail from the University of Montana inviting you to participate in a survey of people who have recently floated the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. If you have already completed and returned the questionnaire, please accept our sincere thanks. We are very grateful for your participation because it will help us understand whitewater floaters’ attitudes about the management of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

If you have not completed and returned the survey, we would like to express how important it is that we hear from you soon. You are one of a small number of people selected to give your opinions on this matter. Your responses will help us understand how Colorado River management decisions affect whitewater recreation in the Grand Canyon.

We are anxious to hear from you. I would like to encourage you to complete and return the questionnaire today. Your contribution will add to the success of this study and your time is greatly appreciated. If you need another copy of the questionnaire, please feel free to contact me at 406-721-2265 and a replacement questionnaire will be mailed to you.

Final Letter with the Replacement Survey

Dear Grand Canyon Whitewater Floater:

About three weeks ago you received a questionnaire from the University of Montana inviting you to participate in a survey of people who have floated the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. As of today we have not received your completed questionnaire. I am writing to tell you that there is still time to complete and return the enclosed survey to our research team, however, if you mailed your survey within the past few days, please accept our thanks.

The National Park Service requested the University of Montana to conduct this study to help understand the social and economic impacts of water levels on recreation uses of a section of the Colorado River corridor through the Grand Canyon. The information we collect will be considered by the National Park Service to better understand white water floaters’ attitudes about the use and management of selected locations along the Colorado River corridor.

We would like to ask that you consider taking the time to respond to this questionnaire today. It should take about 20 minutes to complete, and it does not require any special knowledge - we just ask that you consider each question and respond with your own opinion. Once you are done, please use the enclosed postage paid envelope and return it to Dr. John Duffield at the University of Montana. Your participation is completely voluntary and your responses will be anonymous.

We are looking forward to hearing from you. We are very grateful for your participation and time. If you have any questions, please contact me at 406-721-2265.

Sincerely,

Dr. John Duffield, Survey Director
