5. Proposed experiment for R17 NLSY97
As part of the Round 17 main interview we are planning an experiment to help us understand data quality issues associated with fielding the NLSY97 questions without preloads. It is important for us to build a body of knowledge about the feasibility of web questionnaire administration for our questionnaire and sample. Preloads are a security risk when someone other than the respondent accesses the instrument in a web questionnaire. Therefore future plans for web administration may require fielding questions without the preloads. The results of this experiment will give us some insight into the impact of removing these preloads on data quality.
In the proposed experiment we will investigate the efficacy of the preloads in bounding the respondents’ recall of migration dates. We plan to investigate whether removing the preloaded address affects the respondents’ reports of moving since the last interview or the timing of the moves. The sample will be split with a randomly selected 50% (control group) getting the original NLSY97 questions on migration from the Household Information section with their address at last interview preloaded. The other 50% (experimental group) will be asked modified versions of the questions on migration where the preloaded information on their prior address has been removed. The questions for both groups are shown below.

2. Screening for business ownership
In Round 17, we will pretest the identification owned business with the 1981 birth cohort only. We will do this with the intention of fully fielding the identification of businesses and extended business ownership module in Round 18 to all birth cohorts. The questions below aim only at the identification portion of the overall module planned for Round 18.
The objective of the screener in R17 is to identify businesses mimicking the NLSY79 approach but also to collect enough data to understand how if at all extant information from the NLSY 97 can help us improve data quality of reported businesses and their match with NLSY97 employment data when appropriate. We also hope to generate good estimates of what we will experience in R18 regarding the number of owned businesses and respondents owning at least one business so that we can make good timing estimates.
This section should come after Employment and before Training.

We
would like to know whether you have ever owned a business. By
business, we mean any activity operated with regularity
for the purpose of generating income
or profit.
We are interested in all incorporated companies and partnerships in
which you had any ownership share, as well as unincorporated
businesses that you may have operated as a sole proprietor,
independent contractor, consultant, or free-lancer. This even
includes informal businesses such as cleaning services, gardening
services, and the selling of goods out of your home, as long as they
generated income and were operated on a regular basis. The only
businesses we are not interested in are those operated on a highly
sporadic basis, those carried out purely as a hobby, and those in
which you were merely a shareholder or investor with no role in the
operation of the company.
Since you were 18 years old,
have you ever owned a business that would be of interest to us
according to this description?
