pdfYou Help Us Get Perspective!
Did You Know?
•You are not alone! The NLSY97 is
part of a broader family of National
Longitudinal Surveys that include many
generations of Americans who have
participated for more than 4 decades!
•News stories about YOU and the
NLSY97 have appeared in the United
States and in countries all over the world
like:
Italy
Israel
India
Australia
Singapore
•The National Longitudinal Surveys
are among the most analyzed sources of
information in the social sciences because
YOU participate and provide such good
data!
•Your contribution to the NLSY97
has made the survey so successful
that countries like New Zealand, the
United Kingdom, Canada, Australia
and Germany have modeled their own
studies after the NLSY97!
Your participation has helped the NLSY97 become one of the most valuable social research
surveys around! Without you, we can’t know
the triumphs and challenges of your entire
generation.
The survey provides researchers and policymakers
with information needed to help understand the
nation’s social, economic, health, and educational
needs. This is your chance to help improve our
country!
Each time you complete your interview, you share valuable information about:
•Relationships
•Family
•Work
•School
•Home Life

The NLSY97 Is Going to every-other-year Interviews?
Yes, and for two important reasons. First, we’ve been listening to you and we know how
busy your lives are. We burden you less with every-other-year interviews. And second, by
switching to this interviewing schedule we save the Federal government money while still
providing valuable information. Your participation in the NLSY97 is even more vital now!
Why Do We Keep Interviewing You?
Q&A
The NLSY97 is longitudinal. This means the same people are
interviewed continually over time so we can follow changes
in your lives! This way, we can see both direct cause and effect
of things like additional training or education causing higher
pay, instead of just seeing there is some relationship between
additional training or education and higher pay.
What have some studies using NLSY97 Data been about?
• Challenges to employment in the inner city
• Ways to strengthen families and marriage
• Obstacles for military veterans entering the labor market
• How your parents’ marriage could affect your health
• How having children affects women’s future in work and education
• And many more!
What You
Have To Say Is
Important To Us
We can never thank you enough
for your participation in this study.
You make a difference by helping
researchers and policymakers
understand your generation!
