pdfHealth Message Testing System Expedited Review Form
1. Title of Study: (Please append screener and questionnaire)
Air Quality Information Initiative
2. Study Population: (Discuss study population and explain how they will be selected/recruited.)
We will conduct focus groups with consumers who have been medically diagnosed with one of the
following health conditions: Asthma, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and Heart failure. We will
recruit participants through contact databases at local market research facilities.
Respondent characteristics:
Number of subject: 27
Number of males:
13
Age range: 18+
Number of females: 14
Racial/ethnic composition: All racial/ethnic groups eligible; no quotas
Special group status: (e.g., risk group, health care providers)
Type of group(s): Small focus groups (3 participants per session), segmented by
health condition
Geographic location(s): Atlanta, GA; Detroit, MI; Denver, CO
3. Incentives: (State what incentive will be offered and justify proposed incentives to be used in study.)
We will offer $40 incentives. We selected this amount because incentives must be high enough to equalize
the burden placed on respondents in respect to their time and cost of participation, as well as provide
enough incentive to participate in the study rather than another activity (Russell, 2000). Participants are
also a harder to recruit population, consisting of adults who have been medically diagnosed with asthma,
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or heart failure.
4. Study method: (Please check one below)

5. Purpose of the overall communication effort into which this health message(s) will fit:
(Please provide 2-3 sentences below.)
The purpose of this project is to leverage existing CDC resources for respiratory health by developing and
testing materials that connect individuals with asthma, COPD, or heart failure with those resources. CDC
and its partners will develop these new communication materials and then test the materials with
individuals who have respiratory illnesses and refine them based on audience feedback.
6. Category of time sensitivity: (Please check one below)
Health emergency:
Time-limited audience access:
Press coverage correction:
Time-limited congressional/administrative mandate:
Trend Tracking
Ineffective existing materials due to historical event/social trends:
7. Describe nature of time sensitivity: (Please provide 2-3 sentences below.)
This project examines how air quality educational materials can be improved to direct individuals to
current air quality resources (e.g., AirNow.gov). Current materials in this area are inadequate, suggesting
existing materials and approaches bear improvement.
