The National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) and the Office of Mining Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) are sponsoring a study to help identify ways to improve emergency self-escape for coal miners. Our team of researchers is conducting the study. We are interested in the tasks miners perform and what they need to know and be able to do during an emergency self-escape. We’ll also focus on some of the processes and procedures involved in self-escape (for example, communications, training, equipment). Your mine has agreed to participate in the research. We will be onsite, conducting interviews, running focus group sessions, and observing drills. We are looking for experienced miners to participate in the interviews and focus groups. Participation is voluntary and the results are kept private. Do you have any questions? Are you interested in participating in the study?

[If no] Thank you for your time.

[If yes] We will be scheduling a visit to your mine and will set up a day/time to meet with you and the other participants. Thank you for your time.
