From:

Subject:
Exemption of Parenting Toddlers and PreK, Project 6288
FWA 00005551
As Administrator of the Westat Institutional Review Board (IRB), I reviewed the materials
submitted for the following: Parenting Toddlers and PreK, Project 6288. The Westat IRB
reviews all studies involving research on human subjects. This study is sponsored by Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The purpose of this study is to conduct an evaluation of the Essentials for Parenting Toddlers and
Preschoolers web-based resource for the Division of Violence Prevention at the CDC.
New York University’s (NYU) Family Translational Research Group, subcontractor for the
research, will help design the evaluation.
Westat will create and administer web-based surveys, including the following activities:
· Recruiting participants through social and digital media sources such as blogs and
Facebook,
· Enrolling participants, and
· Collecting the data through the website.
Only Westat will see identified data. Westat will deliver a series of aggregated plots of the
multiple baseline data, and a de-identified dataset, to CDC at the end of the contract
Per [45 CFR 46.101(b5)] and a letter received on October 21, 2014 from Beverly L. Fortson,
Ph.D., Behavioral Scientist, CDC; this research involves a program evaluation and therefore is
exempt from IRB review.
The Project Director is required to notify the Board only if there are changes to the protocol or
procedures regarding this project. In addition, notify the IRB Office as soon as possible if there
are any injuries to the subjects or problems with the study that relate to human subjects.
