COLORADO WINTER WHEAT VARIETIES 2015 CROP
This report provides the results of the Winter Wheat Seedings by Variety Survey, 2015 Crop, conducted by the National
Agricultural Statistics Service, Mountain Regional Field Office.
The survey was funded by the Colorado
Wheat Administrative Committee. The survey of winter wheat producers in Colorado was not sampled to provide a direct
expansion of the seeded acreage by variety or a measure of the sampling error. While a sufficient number of responses were
tabulated to identify the major varieties of winter wheat for the state and major districts, the varietal percentages at the district
and/or county level may not be adequately represented.
Colorado wheat producers seeded an estimated 2.50 million acres to winter wheat in the fall of 2014 for harvest in 2015, down
from 2.75 million acres seeded for the 2014 crop.
Byrd was the most popular variety seeded in Colorado, planted on 28.5 percent of the acreage for the 2015 crop compared with
14.8 percent for the 2014 crop. Hatcher, the number one variety seeded for last year’s crop, slipped to the second most popular
variety by accounting for 18.0 percent of the acreage, down from 25.2 percent for the 2014 crop. Brawl CL Plus jumped to the
third most popular variety from eighth place last year by accounting for 12.8 percent of the acres seeded for 2015. Snowmass
retained fourth place with 4.3 percent of the acreage, compared with 5.1 percent of last year’s crop. Ripper continued to occupy
fifth place with 2.9 percent of the acreage, a decrease from 4.4 percent of the acreage last year. The top five varieties accounted
for 66.5 percent of the acreage seeded. TAM 111 became the sixth leading variety with 2.7 percent of the acreage seeded, down
from 5.4 percent and third place last year. Winterhawk picked up seventh place from thirteenth place last year, with 2.3 percent
of the acreage. TAM 112 earned the eighth place ranking by accounting for 1.6 percent of the acreage seeded. Bill Brown
moved down to ninth with 1.5 percent of the acreage seeded compared with sixth place and 2.7 percent for 2014. Antero
completes the top ten with 1.4 percent, up from a seventeenth ranking and 0.6 percent of the acreage seeded last year.
The top ten varieties represented 76.0 percent of the state's total acreage seeded for the 2015 crop. The 2014 top ten varieties
accounted for 66.8 percent of the total seeded acreage.
