Summary of Enhancements to the
2016-2017 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®)
The U.S. Department of Education and the Office of Federal Student Aid are dedicated to continuously improving the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and associated applicant products.
I. Significant enhancements to the 2016-2017 FAFSA on the Web.
|
The Department has made the following changes to the “School Selection Summary” page:
“For federal student aid purposes, it does not matter in what order you list your selected schools. However, placing schools that are located in your state of legal residence first may help you obtain state aid. Find more information on your state’s preferences for listing schools <link>here</link>.”
“here” links to a page on StudentAid.gov where students can find their state’s preference for ordering schools. |
Updated the Internal Revenue Service Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) text on the FAFSA on the Web “Student Finances 1” and “Student Finances – Corrections” pages to read: To determine if you can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer your tax return information from the IRS into your FAFSA, answer the following question(s):
And on the “Parent Finances 1” and “Parent Finances – Corrections” pages to read: To determine if you, <the parents/ the mother/the father> [depending on the parent(‘s’) marital status], can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer your tax return information from the IRS into the FAFSA, answer the following question(s): |
II. Recommended enhancements to the 2015-2016 FAFSA form that have been applied to the 2016-2017 FAFSA form.
|
On the paper FAFSA, moved page 2 to 9, 9 to 10, and 10 to 2. As a result of moving the notes pages, all references to these pages were updated to reflect the new page numbers. |
Updated IRS Form 1040 and 1040A Tax Line References in Questions 37and 86 text to “Enter […] income tax for 2015. Income tax amount is on IRS Form 1040—line 56 minus line 46; 1040A—line 28 minus line 36; or 1040EZ—line 10.” |
Amended the informational text for Step 6 to read: “Enter the six-digit federal school code and your housing plans for each college or school you wish to receive your FAFSA information. You can find the school codes at www.fafsa.gov or by calling 1-800-433-3243. If you cannot obtain a code, write in the complete name, address, city and state of the college. All of the information you included on your FAFSA, with the exception of the list of colleges, will be sent to each of the colleges you listed. In addition, all of your FAFSA information, including the list of colleges, will be sent to your state student grant agency. For federal student aid purposes, it does not matter in what order you list your selected schools. However, placing schools that are located in your state of legal residence first may help you obtain state aid. Check with your state grant agency for more information. To find out how to have more colleges receive your FAFSA information, read What is the FAFSA? on page 2.” |
