What is the Study About?

Key Study Activities

The study will provide a thorough description of
meals and snacks served in child care, activity
policies and practices of providers, children’s
food consumption in and out of child care, meal
costs, and plate waste.

Reason for Study
Good nutrition is a key to proper childhood
development, but little is known about the food
children are eating while in child care nor their
opportunities for physical activity. In recognition
of the importance of nutrition and physical
activity in child care, Congress directed the USDA
to conduct a nationally representative study of
child care centers and family day care homes.

Study Participants
The study includes about 1,500 child care
centers, family day care homes, and afterschool
programs that participate in the Child and Adult
Care Food Program in 20 states, and some that
do not. About 3,000 children and more than
4,000 parents will also be in the study.
