Talking Points for Parent Recruitment and Consent

Study Liaisons and providers should use the talking points below to describe the study and the consent process to parents being recruited for the study.

Note: The Talking Points and Parent Consent Form and parent instruments and materials (i.e. Parent Interview, Child Food Diary, Study Brochure) are provided in English and Spanish. Therefore, prior to explaining the study, the Study Liaison should ask the parent if they are comfortable understanding, speaking AND reading English or Spanish and which language they are most comfortable with. Study Liaisons should then use the Talking Points and study materials in the language that the parent indicates they are most comfortable with. If the parent is not comfortable with either English or Spanish, then they will not be included in the study.

The study. For the next few months, this (child care center, family day care home, or child care program) where your child receives child care is part of a national study being conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and contractors Abt and Abt SRBI etc. The purpose of the study is to look at the nutrition and activity policies and practices for infants and children in a sample of child care providers. We are one of about 400 child care providers across the country that were selected to help the USDA understand the food and activities provided in child care settings.

Consent process. We would like to ask you to be part of this important study. If you agree to be in the study, you must read and sign an informed consent form. The consent form explains your rights and the study-related activities you and your child will be asked to participate in.

Study activities. In general, the study activities include completing a short parent telephone interview and allowing study staff to observe your child while at the day care facility. You will also be asked to provide information about the foods that your child eats outside of child care. In addition, parents of children aged 1-12 years old will be asked to provide consent for study team members to weigh and measure their child. (Recruiter should review data collection activities listed on the Parent Consent and Permission Form if the parent requests additional information.)

Privacy. Researchers and program staff have to follow all federal and state laws to protect your privacy. Your name will never appear in any report or with any research findings. In general, your information will only be shared with people outside of this project when it is combined with information about many other people in the program. This way, someone cannot identify you specifically.

Risks or benefits. There is a very small risk of loss of confidentiality but the study team has taken many steps to reduce this risk. Your participation in the study will not affect child care or any other services that you or your family receives or may apply for in the future.

Parents will receive $10 for their time signing and returning this Parent Consent and Permission Form. In addition, parents who are selected and agree to provide information about food his/her child eats outside of child care will be provided between $20 and $30 for each day they provide this information.}

The study is voluntary. Taking part in the study is voluntary and will not affect the child care or any other programs or benefits that your family receives. You or your child may change your mind at any time about participating in the study.

Questions/next steps. Do you have any questions about the study? (If recruiter is unable to answer any question, they should contact the study hotline (toll-free 844-808-4777, or tell the parent that they will get an answer for them as soon as possible.)

Recruiter should ask parent to review and sign the Parent Consent and Permission Form.

According to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, an agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not required to respond to, a collection of information unless it displays a valid OMB control number. The valid OMB control number for this information collection is 0584-xxxx. The time required to complete this information collection is estimated to average 3 minutes per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information.
