Study of Nutrition and Activity in Child Care Settings (SNACS)

Brief Description of Study for Provider Newsletter or Website

The (name of child care center/family day care home/child care program) is excited to announce that we will be part of a national study funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The study will look at the foods and activities provided to children in a sample of child care providers. There will be more than 1,500 child care providers in over 20 States selected to be part of the study. In addition, the study will include about 3,000 infants and children and more than 4,000 parents of infants and children receiving care through the child care centers and homes in this study. The study is being conducted by Abt Associates, an independent research organization. We look forward to participating in this important study!

As part of the study, staff and child care providers working at (name of child care center/family day care home/child care program) will be asked to provide information about meals they serve to infants and children and activities they provide for children during child care hours. In addition, parents of children selected for this study will be asked to take part in a short telephone interview and some parents will also be asked to provide information about food his/her child eats outside of child care. Some parents will also be asked to allow their child’s weight and height to be measured by carefully trained professional data collectors and to allow their child to be part of an observation of meals or activities in child care. Parents whose children are selected for any of these activities will be provided more details about the study and will be asked to provide their written permission for their children to be part of these activities.

Parents who sign and return the study consent and permission form will receive $10 in the form of prepaid Visa cards. Parents who are selected and agree to provide information about food his/her child eats outside of child care will be provided between $20 (for a day when their child is in child care) and $30 (for a day when their child is not in child care) in the form of prepaid Visa cards for each day they provide this information.
