Amendment Approval – Expedited Review
Principal Investigator/Project Director: Stuart Michaels
Department: Public Health/ARC
IRB Protocol Number: 16.01.04
Project Number: 7836
Protocol: Developing tools to engage adolescent men who have sex with men (AMSM)

Amendment description: The inclusion of Web advertisements. Not all web ads may be
used in recruiting for the pilot or main web survey; select options will be tested during the
pilot in order to identify the ads that are most successful in recruiting respondents and
generating completed surveys.
- Revised questionnaire is attached with revisions from CDC review, internal review and
testing, and suggestions from the research advisory panel. This survey also incorporates
appropriate skip logic and phrasing for young transgender respondents.
- Clarification incorporated into the protocol to describe target population size. We anticipate
recruiting up to 2,000 respondents in the main web survey: 1,000 AMSM ages 13-18 and
1,000 transgender youth ages 13-24. The survey will remain open for up to 12 months to
recruit this target.
- Project received additional funding to provide a $10 incentive for all web survey
respondents. This is anticipated to be necessary to recruit respondents due to the small
target population and potential sensitivity of the subject matter.
- E-mail will need to be collected at the beginning of the survey to allow for prompting to
those who break-off mid-survey. This data will be maintained completely separately from
the survey response data and not able to be linked in any way.

This certifies approval of the amendment described above by the NORC
Institutional Review Board (IRB00000967), using the expedited review process as
described in 45 CFR 46.110(b), under its Federalwide Assurance #FWA00000142,
which is valid through July 10, 2018.
