Subject: EPIAID Assistance in field epidemiological and toxicological investigation in Chitima, Tete
province, Mozambique
Dear Dr. Monterroso,
I am writing to request the assistance from CDC in the ongoing field investigation of an apparent food
poisoning in Chitima, Tete province, Mozambique. The poisoning may have occurred through the
consumption of a traditional beverage on Friday, January 9th. So far, 177 cases and 75 deaths have been
reported. Given preliminary to clinical and epidemiological findings, it is believed that a chemical toxic has
caused the poisoning.
The Mozambique INS has initiated the field investigation with FELTP fellows but feels additional assistance
of subject matter experts could help expedite the investigation.
In this context, Mozambique’s National Institute of Health is requesting for the National Center for
Environmental Health to send an ESIO and necessary additional staff to support in the field investigation of
the outbreak.
We will be looking forward to a favorable response to our request.
Thank you,
Dr. Ilesh V. Jani
Director General
Mozambique’s National Institute of Health
