MosquitoNET Focus Group Discussion Guide

  1. Introduction and Informed Consent

Hello, my name is Roxanne Connelly and I am from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Arboviral Disease Branch, Entomology and Ecology Team Lead. I would like to introduce my collaborators, John Jones, Amy Ferringer-Tschopp, David Packard, Janet McAllister, and John-Paul Mutebi.

Thank you for your willingness to share your thoughts and opinions with us. Your ideas will help us improve the national mosquito surveillance and insecticide resistance database “MosquitoNET” to increase user participation and improve user experience. You have been invited to participate in this discussion because you are a current user of MosquitoNet, or because you work in mosquito control. Your responses will help us to understand your needs from a surveillance database, to understand the barriers to contributing data, and to learn how we can update the format to make it easier for you to use.

Before I begin I want to go over a couple of items including ground rules:

  • Allow/encourage everyone to participate

  • Remember that disagreement is OK

  • Please turn cell phone ringers off or to vibrate

  • Speak one at a time within your group

  • Speak loudly and clearly

  • There are no right or wrong answers

  • Please be respectful of the other participants and maintain their privacy by not sharing what is said in discussion with others (Respect confidentiality of the group)

  • Free to leave at any time if needed

  • Your participation in this discussion is voluntary. You do not have to answer any questions you don’t want to answer.

  • There are no right or wrong answers. We are interested in your opinion. If you don’t understand the question, feel free to let us know and we can ask it another way. This is not a test, so feel free to say you don’t know or don’t have an opinion to offer and “I don’t know” is a perfectly acceptable response.

  • It’s important to know that answers to the questions we are about to ask will only be reported at the group level.

  • You have the option of providing contact information so that we may follow up with additional questions. If the feedback is shared with anyone outside of the development team, contact information will be redacted.

  • Do you have any questions before we begin?

  1. Discussion Questions

  1. How many of you currently use MosquitoNET?

  2. What barriers have you faced to uploading data into and retrieving data from MosquitoNET?

  3. What features of MosquitoNET worked well for you?

  4. In what ways were you able to use the data from MosquitoNET to support your mission?

  5. What data would you like to see added to MosquitoNET and why?

  6. What information would you like to see reported from MosquitoNET and in what format(s)?

  7. For those who do not use MosquitoNET, but are familiar with it, what are some of the reasons that you are not entering data into the system?

We will ask the following questions of attendees who have never used MosquitoNet:

1. Do you currently contribute mosquito surveillance data and insecticide resistance data to a local, regional, or state database? If so, what features work well for you?

2. Would you be willing to voluntarily contribute mosquito surveillance data and insecticide resistance data to a national database? If no, why not?

3. What barriers might exist to contributing mosquito surveillance and insecticide resistance data to a national database?

4. What data would you like to see reported from a national database and in what format(s)?

Thank you so much for your participation.
