Subject: Research Request for Cape Lookout National Seashore Survey

Dear [Friend of Portsmouth Island/Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center Member]:

On behalf of the National Park Service, researchers at NC State University are seeking the opinions of members of the [Friends of Portsmouth Island/Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center] regarding Cape Lookout National Seashore’s historic and cultural resources.

Specifically, we would like to know about

  • Your connections to and values of the historic villages;

  • Your thoughts on the conditions of the resources and how vulnerable you think they are to climate-related changes (rising sea levels, erosion from storm related flooding, wind damage from storms);

  • The extent of changes you’ve noticed and how those changes impact your attachment to the villages; and

  • Your perspective on possible strategies to address climate-related changes.

To take the survey, please click on this link: [url].

Participation in the study is voluntary and completing the survey indicates your voluntary consent for us to include your opinions in the study results. Your name and email address will not be linked to your responses, and only group-level data will be reported. It should take you about 15 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Your participation is important to us. Your responses will help park managers understand the array of cultural resource values and perceptions of possible adaptation strategies to deal with the changing conditions at Cape Lookout National Seashore. We will be sending reminder emails in 3, 7 and 14 days, after which, we will not contact you again regarding this study. If you do not wish to assist in this project, please reply to this email with the message “opt out of study” and we will not contact you again. Please provide a reason for opting out for data validation purposes.

Thank you again in advance for your assistance with this project.

Sincerely,
