USDA/FNS Structured Qualitative Interviews (SQIs)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The following are questions that could arise during the upcoming structured qualitative interviews among State Agency Staff, Sponsoring Organizations and Provider Groups. (Provider Groups include Child Care Centers and Family Day Care Homes.) Responses are provided to offer guidance to KRC’s telephone interviewers about how to respond to questions from respondents.

  • Why is the USDA Food and Nutrition Services team doing this research? What is it for?

The USDA/FNS team would like to have a current understanding about nutrition, physical activity and electronic media practices in child care settings to help inform and improve its programs, training and technical assistance. Your valuable experience, and input from others who have valuable day-to-day experience, will give the USDA/FNS an up-to-date snapshot they need. We really appreciate your time and input.

  • How long will this interview take?

The interview will take approximately 20 minutes.

  • How can I get more information about the research?

If you have additional questions, I can give you the name and telephone number of the KRC project manager or the USDA/FNS project manager and you can contact them directly. Would you like me to give you that information? IF SO:

    • KRC project contact: Anita Sharma 202-585-2918

    • USDA/FNS project contact: Andrea Farmer 703-305-2470

  • Why was I selected for this research? How did you get my name?

The USDA/FNS team would like to get input from representatives of the child care community across the United States because of their valuable perspectives on nutrition, physical activity and electronic media use in child care settings. We are interviewing a random selection of State agency staff administering the Child and Adult Care Food Program and leaders from child care center sponsoring organizations, child care centers, and family day care homes. You were randomly selected from a list of individuals who work in these settings.

[FOR STATE AGENCY STAFF] Your name and contact information was provided by individuals from your FNS regional office who are part of a USDA/FNS Stakeholders group. You were specifically identified as the individual responsible for administering the Child and Adult Care Food Program within your state.

[FOR SPONSORING ORGANIZATIONS] Your name and contact information was provided by State Agency Staff administering the Child and Adult Care Food Program in your state. As a leader at your organization, your perspective will be very important.

[FOR PROVIDER GROUPS] Your name and contact information was provided by either State Agency Staff administering the Child and Adult Care Food Program or Sponsoring Organizations in your state. Representatives from child care centers and family day care homes are being randomly selected from a national list of child care providers.

  • Is this a confidential survey? Who will see my answers?

Your individual responses will be kept secure and only used for research purposes, unless otherwise required by law. KRC Research is an independent survey research company. We are conducting this research on behalf of the USDA/FNS. The USDA/FNS selected KRC to conduct the interviews to guarantee that any information will be kept secure. KRC will never report your individual answers with your name or your organization. All data will be reported in aggregate, as a percentage. If you participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program, your answers to our survey will not affect your status in the program in any way at all.

  • May I get the report with the findings? When will the findings be available?

KRC will be preparing a report with findings for USDA/FNS in 2014. The USDA will determine how the information is distributed.

  • Is this a marketing call? Will anyone try to sell me anything?

No, this is not a marketing call. This is a voluntary survey of State agency staff administering the Child and Adult Care Food Program and leaders from child care center sponsoring organizations, child care centers, and family day care homes. All information will be kept secure and only used for research purposes, unless otherwise required by law. We are not selling anything and your responses will not affect your status in the Child and Adult Care Food Program in any way.

  • How long will this interview take?

On average, the interview will take approximately 20 minutes. If this is not a good time to conduct the interview, we can schedule the interview for another time that is more convenient.

  • What’s in it for me? What do I get out of this?

Your feedback will help the USDA develop resources and training for child care providers related to nutrition, physical activity and electronic media use in child care settings. Your input is very valuable and without the input of people like you, the USDA will not have the information it needs to improve its programs. We would appreciate your participation.

  • What if I am unsure about or unable to answer some of the questions?

This survey is voluntary and you are not required to answer any question you do not feel comfortable answering. We hope you will answer as many questions as possible so that we will have a reliable snapshot of current practices related to nutrition, physical activity and electronic media use in child care settings.

  • Is there another way to complete the interview?

Yes—you can complete the survey online if you have access to the Internet. If you would prefer to complete the interview online, we can send you the details about how to do that. Would you like me to e-mail you details about how to complete the survey online?

  • Can the interview be completed in a language other than English?

Yes—if you prefer, we can conduct the interview in Spanish. Would you prefer to conduct the interview in Spanish?
