In May 2007, the FCC released the
Second Report and Order, Digital Audio Broadcasting Systems and
Their Impact on the Terrestrial Radio Broadcast Service, FCC 07-33,
MM Docket 99-325. Provisions of the Order require station ID
requirements (Section 73.1201(b)(1)) for Digital Audio Broadcasting
stations to facilitate public participation in the regulatory
process. Section 73.1201(a) requires TV broadcasters to make
station ID announcements at the beginning/ending of each time of
operation, hourly, and at natural breaks in programming. It
requires the station IDs to consist of call letters followed by the
community(ies) of the station. TV/Class A TV stations announcements
can be visual or aural. Sec. 74.783(b) requires TV translators,
whose station ID is made by the TV station whose signals are being
rebroadcast, to furnish contact information. Section 74.1283(c)(1)
requires an FM translators whose ID is made by the primary station
to furnish current contact information. Section 74.783(e) permits
low power TV permittees or licensees to request to be assigned
four-letter call signs in lieu of the five-character alpha-numeric
call signs.
