THIS IS TOO EXTENSIVE AND COSTLY. BEST FOR YOU TO EMPLOY SOMEBODY
TO EXAMINE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TURF FIELD AND PAY FOR THE TESTING
OF WHETHER IT IS POISON OR NOT. JUST DO IT. THIS ROUNDABOUT WAY OF
LETTING PROFITEERS TRY TO HOODWINK YOU IS STUPID. PAY FOR THE
TESTING OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES. FIND THE BEST TYPE AND MAYBE ALLOW
IT IF IS NOT HARMFUL. IF IT IS HARMFUL, JUST BAN IT. THIS ROUNDABOUT WAY
YOU HAVE PROPOSED IS JUST PLAIN STUPID. AND VERY COSTLY IN THE LONG
RUN. IT WILL TAKE 20 YEARS THE WAY YOU PROPOSE TO OINVESTIGATE THIS.
WE DONT HAVE THAT MUCH TIME IF OIUR KIDS ARE BEING HARMED. WE WANT
ANSWERS AND WE WANT THEM NOW.

I applaud the EPA for taking up this investigation. As a goal keeper who was diagnosed with
Hodgkin's Lymphoma after many years of playing on turf fields, I am eager to know if there is a
causal link. It will also critically effect my decision to coach our young children on these
surfaces. Without concrete scientific information, we are currently boycotting the surfaces, so
the potential economic damage that some may be concerned about is already being done.

I commend Sens. Blumenthal and Nelson for their interest in this very important topic. I also
thank the White House for directing 3 governmental agencies to research crumb rubber in
artificial turf fields. Very importantly, the general public should acknowledge the efforts of
Coach Amy Griffin at the Univ of Washington and NBC for playing such a large part in
stimulating discussion on this topic.
My son died from leukemia at the age of 14 and was a very accomplished, elite-level soccer
player. Did crumb rubber play any role in his death? I have no idea. But this is a topic that
absolutely deserves to be researched and we need to let the science guide us to whatever is the
most honest answer.
Following my son's death, I have dedicated my life to fighting childhood cancer and the charity
that I run has been very involved in research into crumb rubber. We are working with very
accomplished epidemiologists at one of the leading universities in the U.S. If appropriate, we
look forward to collaborating with these governmental agencies. And, let's also not forget that
appropriate testing should also be done on the alternative surfaces (i.e. natural grass) as other
potential environmental hazards (i.e. fertilizers, chemicals) may also be present for kids and
adults.

The bottom line is that we need to get an answer that is grounded in science. If there's no harm
to crumb rubber, then this is a great way to keep tires out of landfills. If we learn that crumb
rubber is dangerous, its use must be stopped immediately. This is, understandably, a very
emotional topic. But, we need to ensure that the scientific research design is right, the science is
fair and interpreted honestly, and conducted as quickly as possible (without political
interference or delay).
Thank you.

I am glad the federal government is planning to research safety of crumb rubber. I've read about
this issue in the papers, and heard radio shows addressing this. Too many products are put on
the market in the USA with no regard for safety for humans, animals or the environment.

Study development should include consultation with the European Union (EU) scientists and
regulators that developed current Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of
Chemicals (REACH) standards. The EU Commission Regulation No. 1272/2013 (amending
Annex XVII to Regulation No. 1907/2006) states:
"5.Articles shall not be placed on the market for supply to the general public, if any of their
rubber or plastic components that come into direct as well as prolonged or short-term repetitive
contact with the human skin or the oral cavity, under normal or reasonably foreseeable
conditions of use, contain more than 1 mg/kg (0,0001 % by weight of this component) of any of
the listed PAHs. Such articles include amongst others:
sport equipment such as bicycles, golf clubs, racquets
household utensils, trolleys, walking frames
tools for domestic use
clothing, footwear, gloves and sportswear
watch-straps, wrist-bands, masks, head-bands
6. Toys, including activity toys, and childcare articles, shall not be placed on the market, if any
of their rubber or plastic components that come into direct as well as prolonged or short-term
repetitive contact with the human skin or the oral cavity, under normal or reasonably
foreseeable conditions of use, contain more than 0,5 mg/kg (0,00005 % by weight of this
component) of any of the listed PAHs."

The ATSDR study should test for PAHs and also reference and discuss the rationale behind
these EU limits.

Knowing the composition of tires I am very uncomfortable have my kids play amongst such
small bits every day. They get in your hair, socks, shoes, stuck to your clothes, in your ears, and
even mouth. The degradation of such small pieces are bound to happen allowing a release of
chemicals and heavy metals, which cannot be good for the body and or environment. As an
advocate for the environment I am supportive of recycling of tires, but not at the expense of our
children in their playgrounds and sports fields. I hope the ban of crumb rubber fill becomes the
norm for the sake of our children and the environment.

Synthetic Turf Fields with Crumb Rubber poses an environmental and health risk for our
children. Further studies must be done on these toxic substances.

I am a soccer player and play regularly on turf fields. It has burned my feet and melted my
shoes on extremely hot days. It also smells toxic at times. The tire crumbs are very annoying
and come home with me in my socks/shoes and on me after playing.
