Under the authority of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation & Management Act (16 U.S.C. 1801 et seq.) and the American Fisheries Act (AFA), 16 U.S.C. 1851, National Marine Fisheries Service, Alaska region manages the groundfish fisheries in the exclusive economic zone off Alaska through fishery management plans. NMFS developed a management program for the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Management Area pollock. The BSAI pollock fishery AFA permanent permits (AFA catcher vessel, AFA catcher/processor, AFA mothership, and AFA inshore processor) had a one-time application deadline of December 1, 2000. Except for annual permits, all participants in the AFA pollock fishery are already permitted, and the permits are issued with an indefinite expiration date. The annual AFA permits are: inshore vessel cooperative permit and inshore vessel contract fishing permit. An AFA vessel replacement application may be submitted to NMFS at any time it is necessary.
