Re: Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) Registry

Dear Mr./Ms. :


Attached for your information and review is a print-out of the Federal Communication Commission’s E911 Registry of Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) listing for your state.1 The Commission maintains a database of E911 deployment information, as reported by wireless telecommunications carriers, to monitor carrier compliance and Phase I and Phase II service requests across the nation.


Maintaining an accurate inventory of PSAPs is key to determining our nation’s deployment capability.2 In order to achieve a more accurate PSAP registry, we ask that you review the attached list of PSAPs for your state and provide corrections or updates as necessary. We would appreciate your input on the following matters concerning that list:


  • Verify the total number and names of the PSAPs in your jurisdiction that handle the initial incoming 911 calls (Primary PSAPs). It may be that the Commission either has not included some PSAPs and needs to add them to its registry, or has included public safety entities that are not in fact PSAPs.


  • Identify the location by county and city for each PSAP.


  • Provide a description of the PSAP agency, including whether it is a primary or secondary PSAP. A primary PSAP has been defined as a PSAP to which 911 calls are routed directly from the 911 Control Office (e.g., a selective router or 911 tandem). A secondary PSAP is a PSAP to which 911 calls are transferred from a primary PSAP.


It is recommended that you submit your State’s PSAP information electronically in Excel spreadsheet format on or before {date}. A suggested format example is attached (Attachment C). To request a copy of the Excel spreadsheet send an email to [insert name], Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, Federal Communications Commission. Please provide submit your State’s PSAP list and information on or before [ insert date ]. Should you have any questions [insert name] may reached at (xxx) xxx-xxxx.

It is our belief that the Commission’s Master PSAP Registry will continue to be helpful to E911 stakeholders, and will provide a clearer view of E911 implementation as we monitor the progress in areas that have yet to deploy Phase I and Phase II capability. We look forward to continuing to work with you as part of our inter-governmental effort to achieve full nationwide E911 deployment.
