We are writing to request information for our 2017 Census of Governments, Survey of Local
Government Finances. This survey provides the only source of nationwide, comprehensive
information on state and local government finances. Results of this survey are used by the U.S.
Congress, federal agencies, state governments, and other local governments, educational and
research organizations and the general public.
Title 13 United States Code (U.S.C.), Sections 161 and 182 authorize the U.S. Census Bureau to
conduct this collection and to request your voluntary assistance and has been approved by the
U.S. Office of Management and Budget number 0607-0585. These data are subject to provisions
of Title 13 U.S.C., Section 9(b) exempting data that are customarily provided in public records
from rules of confidentiality.
As in previous survey years, we would like to obtain copies of the reports specified below for all
county, city, township, and special purpose governments in STATE. The data we are
requesting is for local governments with fiscal years ending July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017.

of State Government Tax Collections (STC). This summary is the only comprehensive source
of details on tax collections by type of tax imposed and collected by state governments in the
United States. The U.S. Congress, federal agencies, state and local governments, educational
and research organizations, and the general public utilize these data for the following purposes:
development of gross domestic product estimates, development of the national income and
product accounts, and tax policy research.
Title 13, United States Code, Section 182, authorizes the U.S. Census Bureau to conduct this
collection and to request your voluntary assistance and has been approved by the U. S. Office of
Management and Budget (OMB) and given the number 0607-0585. Information provided in this
survey compiled from or customarily provided in public records is exempt from confidential
treatment as cited in Title 13, United States Code, Section 9.
Please complete and return the attached spreadsheet by December 31, 2017 by replying to this
email.
If the information is not currently available, please respond with an estimated date for when this
data will become available. If you identify areas where we have historically missed tax line
items, please add these tax line items directly into the spreadsheet. If there are any changes or
