MEMORANDUM FOR: Reviewer of 1220-0141
FROM : Nora Kincaid, BLS Clearance Officer
Division of Management Systems
SUBJECT: Nonsubstantive change for Increase in Burden Hours
for BLS Generic package “Cognitive and Psychological Research”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is requesting that the burden hours for BLS package 1220-0141, Cognitive and Psychological Research, be increased an additional 660 hours to bring the current total for the 3 year period to 7266 hours.
When the package was originally submitted, 6606 burden hours were requested and approved for the 3 year period. BLS has used a total of 5615 hours for the 3 year period thus far, and anticipates needing an additional 660 hours before the full package can be renewed. BLS will begin the process for renewal immediately. Unexpected program requests, testing of the revised CIPSEA pledge, and greater use of online study resources have caused the use of more burden hours than expected. The greater use of online study resources has also increased the number of actual response use, as we are able to reach a larger group in a shorter time for quicker turnaround. BLS originally estimated 6606 responses, anticipating one hour of burden for each response. Online studies average only 5 to 20 minutes. Responses to date are at 17365. BLS is therefore also increasing its response estimate to 23000 for the 3 year period.
The current expiration date for this package is April 30, 2018
