B1 Key Informant Interview Guide — US

Introduction 10 minutes

My name is and I am talking with you on behalf of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I am here today to get your opinion about education materials about tuberculosis. These materials are still in development. Getting your reaction to them at this stage will help us improve the materials so that the information is helpful and easier to understand. Your opinions are really important to us and we want you to share your best thoughts and ideas. Our conversation will help us improve the materials for other families who are getting medical evaluations for immigration to the United States. Talking to me is completely voluntary and will not affect your immigration process or access to medical care. You can choose to not answer any questions and stop our conversation at any time. Our conversation will not last for more than an hour and a half, and will likely be shorter. First, let’s discuss how things will work if you choose to take part in the conversation.

• Privacy

  • Your full name will not be used, and we will not keep any written record of your name nor will anyone beside those involved in the project who need to review your answers have access to any information collected today. If you are worried about your privacy, you can use a different name during the conversation.

  • Your participation will not in any way affect your immigration process or timeline

• Audio recording and observers/note taker

  • We will be using audio recorders to record today’s conversation which will help us remember what you say since there will be a lot of information discussed and we won’t be able to write everything down.

• We want your honest opinions

  • Again, the main goal today is to get your opinions about these materials so we can make them easier to understand by other people who are going through the immigration medical process. We also want to be sure the materials answer questions about the process that other immigrants are likely to have. So, please do not hesitate to point out things that you don’t like or don’t understand.

• During the discussion, please feel free to ask any questions about the materials.

Section 1: B1 History 20 minutes

1. Please tell me about your experience with getting examined for TB in Mexico when you were applying for your visa to immigrate to the United States.

   1. What information did you receive about the process before you left Mexico?

   2. What was helpful about this information? What was confusing about this information?

   3. What information did you wish you had received before starting the process?

   4. What was the most difficult step of the process?

2. In your own words, how would you describe what a B1 classification of tuberculosis is?

   1. How did having a B1 classification make your immigration process different than others in your family or who you know who applied for a visa?

3. What happened when you were entering the US for the first time?

4. Tell me what you did after arriving in the United States to address the concerns that you might have tuberculosis?

   1. How long after arriving did you call?

   2. How did you get in touch with the health department? What was easy or difficult about that process?

   3. What happened once you linked up with the health department?

5. What do you wish you knew before starting this process that would have made it easier?

6. Is there anything about the B1 process that is still confusing and you would like to know about? Where would you go for that information?

Section 2: Message testing 20 minutes

7. When you look at these materials, what do you understand about what you need to do during your immigration process because of your TB classification?

   1. How accurately does the information in these materials represent what you experienced?

8. What is unclear in these materials?

   1. Are there any words that you don’t understand? What would you suggest instead?

   2. Are there any images that you don’t understand? Are there any images that would help you understand this process better?

9. How realistic is it that others who go through this process will complete all of the steps outlined?

10. How could these materials be improved to more accurately represent the process you experienced?

    1. Does anything need to be added?

11. It is really important that people who are identified as B1 contact the local health department for an evaluation once they arrive at their destination in the United States. What will help others complete this part of the process?

    1. What concerns do you have about being able to be evaluated by the local health department? (not understanding the health system, language, transportation, fear of impacting immigration, etc.)

    2. Who made the call to the health department? You? Someone else in your family? A friend?

Sus opiniones son realmente importantes para nosotros y queremos que nos comparta sus opiniones e ideas. La dinámica de hoy ayudará a los CDC a mejorar los materiales para otras personas que están recibiendo evaluaciones médicas para la inmigración a los Estados Unidos, su participación ayudara a otros inmigrantes y quizá algunos miembros de su familia que pasen por este proceso., veamos la dinámica a seguir durante el grupo de hoy.

  • No se usarán los nombres completos y no se conservará ningún registro de nombres, solo nuestro equipo tendrá acceso a la información recopilada el día de hoy.
