NMFS proposes to implement management
measures described in Amendment 36A to the Fishery Management Plan
for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf), as
prepared by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council. The
proposed rule would require owners or operators of federally
permitted commercial Gulf reef fish vessels landing any
commercially harvested, federally managed reef fish from the Gulf
to provide notification prior to landing and to land at approved
locations, as well as other management actions. The purpose of the
proposed rule is to improve compliance and increase management
flexibility in the red snapper, and groupers and tilefishes
individual fishing quota programs, and increase the likelihood of
achieving optimum yield for Gulf reef fish stocks managed under
these programs.
