BIA collects data on Indian child welfare caseloads on a quarterly basis. The data is useful on a local level to the tribes and tribal organizations for case management purposes, and on a nationwide basis for planning and budgeting of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) program.

While receiving feedback from the field, a recommendation was made to add language to Part A (2)(C). BIA, Regions, and Tribes frequently receive and process hundreds of Non-Tribal, ICWA Notices. That is, BIA Regions and Tribes process and respond to ICWA notices where the State or the court is requesting a search of Tribal ancestry. The Tribal ancestry search can be for the child or family members. BIA Regions and Agencies, and Tribes currently do not capture these types of notices. With BIA adding the Part A (2)(C) data element, DHS anticipates approximately 204 more reports per quarter for Part A.
