11 Describe the purpose of the system.

The GISP Project was established in 1986 to monitor trends in
antimicrobial susceptibilities of strains of Neisseria Gonorrhea
(N. gonorrhea) in the United States and to establish a rational
basis for the selection of gonococcal therapies. GISP is a
collaborative project between selected Sexually Transmitted
Diseases (STD) clinics, five regional laboratories, and the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In GISP, N. gonorrhea isolates are collected from the first 25
men with urethral gonorrhea attending STD clinics each
month in approximately 28 cities in the United States. No
identifiable information is collected or maintained.
GISP was established in 1986 as a collaborative project to
collect antimicrobial susceptibilities of gonorrhea from 27
select STD clinics and 5 regional labs monthly. It monitors
trends in antimicrobial susceptibilities of strains of Neisseria
Gonorrhea in the United States and establishes a rational basis
for the selection of gonococcal therapies.

Data maintained is forwarded from the State Health
Departments to the CDC for surveillance statistical analysis
only. GISP focuses on N. gonorrhoeae isolates that are
collected from the first 25 men with urethral gonorrhea
attending STD clinics each month in approximately 28 cities in
the United States.
No personal identifiers are maintained.

1- System name has been changed since last PIA (previous name: Gonococcal Isolate Surveillance Project
(GISP)).
2- System previously stored DOBs (the only PII that was being collected and maintained), but the System
Manager has determined since the last PIA that DOBs are no longer needed; consequently, these
identifiers have been deleted consistent with the Records Schedule. No personal identifiers are now being
collected/stored/maintained.
