(NCEZID) – Anthrax Materials Testing

16 IDIs will be held via teleconference with adults age 65+ (n=4), parents of children ages 0–17 (n=8), and
English as a second language adults (n=4). Participants will be recruited from the four regions of the U.S.
and will be screened to exclude types of participants who may bias the interview (e.g., federal employees).

A small honorarium ($50) is being given to IDI participants to reimburse them for their time and possible
expenses incurred due to their participation, such as childcare costs. Providing reimbursement or a token
of appreciation for participation in research is industry best-practice and ensures quality of respondents.

NCEZID has developed anthrax-specific information, a toolkit, and customizable materials that would be
used within the first few hours and days of an anthrax emergency, as well as for the duration of a response.
NCEZID is seeking to gather information on these materials through web-assisted telephone in-depth
interviews with adult consumers. Information on topics such as the resonance of messaging, acceptability
to the target audience, and health literacy is needed to guide the refinement of these materials.
